September 2019

Dear Fellows and colleagues,

Hong Kong has witnessed much social unrest this summer. Despite the current challenging situation, I believe each of you will remain professional and work together to protect the health of Hong Kong. It is our most important mission to ensure quality healthcare is delivered and patient safety is assured. As always, the Academy has been working hard to maintain high standards of specialist training through promoting knowledge exchange and developing collaboration.

First, publishing medical journals is one of the effective ways to facilitate medical research and knowledge sharing. Thanks to the efforts of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Press, I am glad that the Hong Kong Medical Journal (HKMJ) has achieved great improvements over the past year. The 2018 Journal Impact Factor of the HKMJ has grown to 1.588 from 1.226 in 2017. We have also seen a substantial increase of 18% in the proportion of articles that involved international collaboration from 2016 to 2018. I hope you will continue to support HKMJ in the future.

Second, establishing collaboration with medical authorities and organisations outside Hong Kong not only strengthens our unique position in promoting postgraduate medical training, but also fosters synergy that helps enhance the overall standard of specialists and quality of healthcare services. Regarding our work in the Greater Bay Area, I would like to report two important events that have taken place in recent months. On 2 July, established by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association, the SZ-HK Medical Specialist Training Centre was formally unveiled. In addition, Academy Officers and College presidents or representatives attended the Inauguration of the Macao Academy of Medicine cum Fellowship Conferment Ceremony on 13 July. We also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Macao Academy of Medicine to extend our collaboration on specialist training. In October, Vice President (Education and Examinations) Professor Gilberto Leung and I will visit the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences to discuss collaboration between Korea and Hong Kong.

Third, organising medical conferences can gather local, regional and international educationalists and experts to exchange ideas. On 6 to 8 December, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians are co-organising the 4th AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress cum 53rd Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine & Hong Kong Primary Care Conference 2019 at the Academy building. The theme is “People-centred Care: Towards Value-based Innovations”. The three Academies share the same principles in medical postgraduate training and the same colossal demand in primary healthcare. This conference will serve as a good platform for medical practitioners to share clinical knowledge and experience and foster future collaborations. We look forward to seeing you at this exciting and momentous event in the coming December.

Last, none of our achievements will be possible without the generous support of Fellows. To promote engagement, as well as to improve the sense of belonging and strengthen cohesion amongst Fellows, we have recently set up the Social Subcommittee, which is chaired by our Elected Council Member Dr Clara Wu. The Subcommittee is planning a series of activities in the coming months, including a Fellows’ Get-Together, the Golf Tournament, a Nature & Heritage Walk, and an Organic Farm Family Outing, as well as the Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament to be held early next year. Stay tuned for more details!
