Establishment of Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Foundation Fund

In December 1990, the Preparatory Committee of the Academy chaired by Professor Sir David Todd resolved to establish an independent Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Foundation Fund (Foundation Fund) for the purpose of raising funds for the formation and administration of the Academy.

The Foundation Fund was formally incorporated on 6 June 1991. Dr. David Fang was elected Chairman of the Executive Board of the Foundation Fund.

The Foundation Fund organised several major fund raising events. These included a Cantonese opera sung in English entitled "The Fighting Bride" in March 1992 and a "Walk for the Academy - Walk for Health" in May 1992, and a Cantonese opera jointly organised with the Kwan Fong Charitable Foundation in January 1994.

The Academy Building is named after The Hong Kong Jockey Club in appreciation of its generous grant of HK$165 million for the building development project with construction commenced in 1996. The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was held in May 1997.

An official opening ceremony of the Academy Building was held in 1998, and the Academy secretariat moved in, relocating from the temporary office in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. The Academy Building was awarded the Certificate of Merit 1999 by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.

The 10-storey Academy Building houses the Secretariat Office of the Academy, head offices of its 15 Academy Colleges, and offices of the Medical Council of Hong Kong and the Dental Council of Hong Kong. The building has several multi-purpose venues that can be hired for training activities, examinations, conferences, scientific meetings and networking activities. These event services are primarily utilised by medical and healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge and share expertise.

In 2013, the whole 7th floor of the Academy Building was transformed into a simulation centre funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, named the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine. Being an education arm of the Academy that promotes innovative and simulation-based learning without patient risk, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine offers a simulated environment fully-equipped with a broad range of procedural skill simulators and part-task trainers for training. In 2022, the Academy set up an Education Office, which is located on ninth floor of the Academy Building, aiming to better coordinate relevant resources and provide dedicated support to the overall development of initiatives relating to the postgraduate medical and dental education and training.

A baby care room has been set up on the 2nd floor of the Academy Building to ensure a supporting environment for breastfeeding to cater for special needs of new mothers, who attend events or work here.
