The Academy has started liaising with organisers on pilot runs of the App for their activities to be held so that they will gradually use this paperless online accreditation application and attendance capture process from 2017 onward. In addition, briefing sessions will be conducted for organisers to further promote the App and the system.

Alzheimer’s disease: insights for risk evaluation and prevention in the Chinese population and the need for a comprehensive programme in Hong Kong/China
September was World Alzheimer’s Month, which aims to raise awareness of dementia. In the near future, China is expected to be see a large increase in the number of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This timely review looks at several aspects of AD care in Hong Kong, finding that primary care and AD-related support for at-risk individuals, patients, and caregivers are inadequate. The authors recommend a joint effort from the medical community, government, universities, non-governmental organisations/charities, and industry to initiate development of a long-term programme for AD.

Depression and anxiety among university students in Hong Kong
Worrying increases in the numbers of students who died by suicide in recent years has led to widespread concern. The number of reported suicides among those aged 15 to 24 years has tragically increased year on year from 52 in 2014, to 68 in 2015 and 75 in 2016. This study investigating the underlying rates of depression and anxiety found that up to 68.5% of university students in Hong Kong report some degree of depression and 54.4% report some degree of anxiety.

Measles: a disease often forgotten but not gone
Despite ample evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the measles vaccine, unvaccinated individuals continue to be a source of measles outbreaks in developed countries; a problem exacerbated by vaccine negligence or refusal. For example, in the United States, the annual incidence of measles was 0.08 per million in 2001, but in 2015 this number was 25 times higher, at 2.06 per million. This review recommends universal childhood immunisation and vaccination of all susceptible individuals to prevent such outbreaks, and ultimately to eliminate measles.
