Election of Council Members

The term of office of the 5 elected Council members will expire at the conclusion of this year's annual general meeting. Election process will start in July, and results will be announced at the AGM to be held in December 2013. Fellows will receive the nomination form shortly. Completed nomination form must reach the Academy office before 5 p.m. on 13 September 2013.

A total of 131 new Fellows were admitted at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on 13 June 2013.

CME/CPD Reminder

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2013. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Starting from 1 January 2008, no more than 75 points can be awarded for passive participation in a 3-year cycle. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.

 


 

Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2013 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.

Reminder:

  1. All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September 2013. According to Bylaw 6.4:
  2. If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is not received by the Academy within 9 months after such payment falls due, despite two written reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automatically forfeit his membership.

  3. It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount.
  4. For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer / credit card, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts or credit card automatically.
  5. Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note.
  6. Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit written applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates next year. MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award

Nature of the Award
The MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote the subject of patient safety, risk reduction, quality and professional standards, and medical ethics.

Who is Eligible for the Award?
Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of the following topics, are eligible for the Award:

  • Patient safety
  • Risk reduction
  • Quality and professional standards
  • Medical ethics

Presentation of the Award
The Award (a plaque and a cheque for HK$20,000) will be presented to the winning author. The Winner of the Award will be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

Application will open on 15 June 2013 and close on 15 August 2013.

Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees

The Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine recognizes excellence in research done by doctors who are in specialist training. Submission deadline for the year 2013 award is 31 July 2013 (postmark). Interested trainee doctors can download the following documents (PDF and MS Word format) for reference and use.

 


 

WONCA World Conference 2013

The 20th World Conference of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA ) was held in Prague on 25 - 29 June 2013. Dr. Donald Li was invited to attend the opening ceremony and conference in his capacity as President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Dr. Li was also invited to a dinner hosted by the Czech Republic's Minister of Health, in honor of WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan, who was keynote speaker and Guest of Honor of the conference.

During the preceding meetings of the WONCA World Council and World Executive Committee, Dr. Li was elected a Member-at-Large and Honorary Treasurer of the WONCA World Executive Committee. It was a competitive election with 7 candidates for 3 positions; Dr. Li won his post with high number of votes.

HKAM 20th Anniversary

The Academy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-10 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times"

The HKSAR Chief Executive, Mr. CY Leung, has accepted to be the Guest of Honour for the Opening. The scientific programme is being worked out and would be published in due course.

2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress / 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine

The 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress and 47th SMCM will be held in Singapore on 23-24 August 2013. The three Academies in Hong Kong (HKAM), Malaysia (AMM) and Singapore (AMS) agreed to have tripartite congress in every three years starting from 2010. The first tripartite congress was hosted by HKAM and successfully held in Hong Kong in 2010.
