Survey on the use of social media in the medical and dental profession

Social media has gained much popularity for personal use since its introduction. Recently it is moving quickly to become one of the means for doctors and dentists to communicate with patients and non-patients alike. For doctors and dentists where the boundary between social and professional life may sometimes be blurred, social media has to be used with caution. Some overseas medical organisations have already promulgated guidelines on the use of social media. In view of this, Academy has formed a Social Media Task Force under the Professionalism and Ethics Committee.

This anonymous survey conducted by the Task Force aims to study the usage of social media in Hong Kong by Fellows and trainees of the Academy. Ethical approval has been obtained from the Survey and Behavioural Research Ethics Committee of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It will take you 10 minutes to complete the survey. The results and findings would inform the Academy to decide whether a guideline on the use of social media for professional communication with patients and non-patients should be formulated and the contents thereof.

All information provided to this questionnaire will be used for internal study and aggregate analysis only. To ensure confidentiality of data, encryption of connections, database and data-analysing devices will be exercised. After data acquisition and utilisation process, the data will be properly erased to ensure that it would be not recovered by others.

For Academy Fellows who wish to obtain CME/CPD points, there is an optional Supplement for you after you have completed the survey. Please fill in your full name and date of birth (for identification purpose in obtaining accreditation for CME/CPD points) before spending not less than 1 hour to read some social media related articles and submit to obtain CMECPD points.

Please access the survey here: https://online.hkam.org.hk/form/surveySM

Awareness of fertility preservation among Chinese medical students
Fertility preservation services are available in Hong Kong but are underutilised. In this study, Ng et al surveyed Chinese medical students in Hong Kong. The respondents supported fertility preservation, particularly for medical reasons. However, their knowledge and awareness of fertility preservation and the surrounding issues, such as infertility and fertility decline, were limited. The authors advocate improvements to the medical curriculum to address these knowledge gaps.

Attitudes, acceptance, and registration in relation to organ donation in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional study
There is a discrepancy between the number of people with a positive attitude towards organ donation and the number who are registered organ donors in Hong Kong. Teoh et al conducted telephone interviews with 1000 Chinese residents of Hong Kong and found that opportunity and motivation were major factors. Greater effort is needed to actively engage prospective donors. The authors conclude that, in addition to booths and other face-to-face promotional methods, social media is an important platform to engage potential donors and encourage online registration.

The Department of Health has a website dedicated to promoting organ donation: https://www.organdonation.gov.hk/
