Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees (BORT)
The BORT introduced by the Academy recognises excellence in research done by doctors while in specialist training. Submission deadline for the year 2020 award is 30 June 2020 (postmark). Interested trainee doctors may refer to the documents below for more details.
Updates on temporary suspension / adjustment of dining services and building facilities
Taking into consideration the recent development of the COVID-19 and due to operational reasons, the Dining Room on 2/F has been closed early since mid-February 2020 and will remain closed until further notice. Details are listed as follows:

Maintenance and repair works on external walls of Academy Building (Phase II: January – June 2020)
Major maintenance and repair works on the external walls of the Academy building are being carried out. For safety reasons, the Fellows’ Garden on 3/F is now closed until further notice. The Academy will try best to make sure events held at the building would be affected as minimal as possible.

New CME / CPD Principles and Guidelines 2020-22
A revised set of CME / CPD Guidelines has been approved and become effective. Minor changes are in Section 10, in which the new Guidelines reflect the new requirement from Medical Council of Hong Kong for the Academy to provide information on CME / CPD of all Fellows after the end of cycle (instead of providing the information on those non-compliance cases only in the past). iCMECPD App now available at App Store and Google Play
To further enhance the online services for CME / CPD, a mobile application “iCMECPD” has been developed to capture attendance. It is now available at Apple's App Store and Google's Play. Fellows may download the App by scanning the respective QR code (or search "iCMECPD" from App Store / Google Play) and install it in smartphones with operating system in iOS (8.0 or above) or Android (4.3 or above).

Annual subscription
Demand notes for the 2020 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows in January 2020. Fellows are advised to settle the payment online through iCMECPD (Quick User Guide) or by cheque before 30 June 2020. Otherwise, a surcharge of $1,000 or pro-rated rate where applicable will be levied for overdue payment.
To help save the environment, Fellows may register for e-receipt instead of receiving a hard copy by post upon receipt of the demand notes.
* Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit formal written applications for reduced rates/ fee-waiving before 31 December 2019. Update contact details
The Academy sometimes gets error messages when sending messages to Fellows' registered emails, which may be caused by full mailboxes, invalid addresses, etc. A valid email address is an essential detail for Fellows to gain access to iCMECPD account and view the CME / CPD profile. In order to help us maintain an up-to-date database, please keep us informed whenever there are changes to your email address, mailing address or contact number by logging into your account of iCMECPD (http://www.icmecpd.hk). Please also be reminded to keep your registered emails active by ensuring there is sufficient mailbox capacity.

Congenital infections in Hong Kong: an overview of TORCH
TORCH (Toxoplasmosis, Other [including syphilis], Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex virus) refers to a group of congenital infections with similar clinical presentations, including rash and ocular findings. This locally relevant Review by Leung et al discusses the clinical features, public health implications, medical management, and neurodevelopmental outcomes of these TORCH infections.
Patient-reported outcomes after surgery or radiotherapy for localised prostate cancer: a retrospective study
In this study, Ng et al compared the patient-reported outcomes of robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy and radical external beam radiotherapy in patients with prostate cancer. The authors found several differences in terms of complications and patient-reported outcomes. In particular, urinary function and incontinence were significantly affected by surgical treatment, impacting patient quality of life.
Hong Kong domestic health spending: financial years 1989/90 to 2017/18
This report presents the latest estimates of Hong Kong domestic health spending for financial years 1989/90 to 2017/18, cross-stratified and categorised by financing scheme, function and provider compiled based on the guidelines given in A System of Health Accounts 2011. Compared with other economies, although Hong Kong has devoted a relatively low percentage of GDP to health care, it is commensurate with the public revenue collected.

Responses to the outbreak of COVID-19
In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) has taken a number of initiatives, sharing professional knowledge and updated information with the community and professionals from different sectors.
A webpage containing diverse resources and useful links of preventing the spread of COVID-19 was established. Besides, instant updates and reliable advice would be released on the HKJCDPRI Facebook, allowing the public to timely access the latest news. A Messenger Chatbot on Facebook was also established to answer the specific enquiry from the public on the COVID-19.
In addition to the digital resources, HKJCDPRI has recently published the COVID-19 Guide Book promoting the preventive measures of this unprecedented disease. HKJCDPRI also partnered with Dr. Lucci Lugee Liyeung for the making of an interesting illustrator book, educating children on how to prevent spreading of the disease.

Application deadline extended - 2019 Open Call for Investigator-initiated Projects
Due to the recent development of COVID-19, Research Fund Secretariat of Research Office, the Food and Health Bureau has extended the application deadline of 2019 Open Call for Investigator-initiated Projects under Health and Medical Research Fund to 30 September 2020 (18:00 HKT). Results of 2019 HMRF Open Call will be announced in March 2021.
