Debriefing Skills for Simulation Instructor Course, 3-4 August 2019
Debriefing Skills for Simulation Instructor Course (DSSI) is another HKJC ILCM’s signature course to provide the essential knowledge and skills to develop learners’ competence in debriefing methods commonly used in simulation training courses. This 2-day course is tailor-made for the healthcare professionals who wish to further pursue simulation-based learning and to apply the techniques of debriefing and feedback as a learning tool in medical simulation.
DSSI was launched in 2018 and 4 courses have already been delivered so far. HKJC ILCM will regularly conduct this course to meet the training demand. DSSI has also been recognised by Hospital Authority (HA) and HA will nominate certain numbers of staff to attend each course.
The course was held on 3-4 August 2019 with 20 participants from different specialties attending the courses. The participants generally found the course heuristic and rewarding, leading them to another level of learning which was useful and valuable to their development in training mission and in their daily work.
Procedural Sedation Safety Course (PSSC)
Procedural Sedation Safety course aims at enhancing patient safety during procedural sedation by acquiring a scientific foundation of safe practice. In the course, participants will experience the high fidelity of simulated scenarios concerning procedural sedation practice and take part in an interactive problem-based learning. Upon completion of this course, participants will have a deeper understanding of the monitoring during procedure and recovery; and be able to recognise promptly and manage the sedation-related complications. The primary audience is all those doctors involved in procedural sedation practice
The course will be held at HKJC ILCM on 20 October 2019.
Debriefing Skills for Simulation Instructors Course (DSSIC)
This newly developed DSSIC aims to provide the essential knowledge and skills to develop learners’ competence in debriefing methods commonly used in simulation training courses. This course is suitable for those who wish to learn more about simulation-based learning and to apply the techniques of debriefing and feedback as a tool in teaching adult learners.
DSSIC is a two-day course and will be held at HKJC ILCM on the dates listed above. The primary audience is healthcare professionals who would like to start simulation-based teaching in their field.
Advanced Simulation Training in Mechanical Ventilation (ASTiM2)
HKJC ILCM has newly developed the ASTiM, in collaboration with Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine (HKSCCM) and Hong Kong College of Critical Care Nursing (HKCCCN), aiming at enhancing knowledge and skills in “Advanced Mechanical Ventilation” through interactive learning activities and hands on simulation training workshops with advanced respiratory ventilator.
ASTiM is a one-day course which will be held at HKJC ILCM on the dates listed above. The primary audience is healthcare professionals taking care of patients requiring mechanical ventilation; while those not in this specialty are also welcomed.
Cost Fee for ASTiM: HK$4,000 (HK$3,200 for HA members)
Applications may need to go through a selection process.
For details and application of the above three courses, please visit HKJC ILCM website at www.hkjcilcm.hk

Fellowship / CME/CPD
CME/CPD Reminder
The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2019. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.
New CME/CPD Principles & Guidelines 2020-22
A revised set of CME/CPD Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Minor changes are in Section 10, in which the new Guidelines reflect the new requirement from Medical Council of Hong Kong for the Academy to provide information on CME/CPD of all Fellows after the end of cycle (instead of providing the information on those non-compliance cases only in the past). Fellows can download the new guidelines from the following link:
It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge defined by Academy on the subscription amount. According to the Academy Council's resolution, subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of HKD1,000 for those paying full subscription rate (or on a pro-rata basis of the HKD1,000 for those paying reduced subscription rate). In addition, the College may also impose a surcharge for the College’s subscriptions where applicable.
Revised Demand notes for the 2019 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows in July 2019. Please settle the payment as soon as possible.
Reminders:
All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September. According to Bylaw 6.4, if a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is not received by the Academy within 9 months after such payment falls due, despite two written reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automatically forfeit his membership.
Fellows aged over 70 do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note.
Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit written applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates next year. For details, please visit http://www.hkam.org.hk/fellows_area/reduced_rate.pdf.

Fellow's Contact Details Update
The Academy sometimes gets error messages when sending messages to Fellows' registered emails, which may be caused by full mailboxes, invalid addresses, etc. A valid email address is an essential detail for Fellows to gain access to iCMECPD account and view the CME/CPD profile. In order to help us maintain an up-to-date database, please keep us informed whenever there are changes to your email address, mailing address or contact number by logging into your account of iCMECPD (http://www.icmecpd.hk). Please also be reminded to keep your registered emails active by ensuring there is sufficient mailbox capacity.
iCMECPD App now available at App Store and Google Play
To further enhance the online services for CME/CPD, the Academy has developed a mobile application for capturing attendance - iCMECPD App. It is now available at Apple's App Store and Google's Play. Fellows may download the App by scanning the respective QR code below (or search "icmecpd" from App Store/Google Play) and install it in their smartphone with operating system in iOS (8.0 or above) or Android (4.3 or above).
Starting from 2017, Fellows may capture their attendance by using the App to scan the QR code for CME/CPD activities held by the Academy/Colleges at the HKAM Jockey Club Building. The Academy has started liaising with organisers on pilot runs of the App for their activities to be held so that they will gradually use this paperless online accreditation application and attendance capture process from 2017 onward. In addition, briefing sessions will be conducted for organisers to further promote the App and the system.

Common urological problems in children: primary nocturnal enuresis
Enuresis is a common paediatric complaint, occurring in ~15% of children aged 6 years, and it may affect neuropsychiatric development. The condition may represent an entire spectrum of underlying urological conditions. Chan and Wong clarify the difference between primary monosymptomatic monosymptomatic enuresis, which can be managed relatively easily, and non-monosymptomatic enuresis, which requires more complex evaluation and treatment. The authors review the diagnosis, investigation, and management of the two types of enuresis.

Clinical considerations when adding a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitor to insulin therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus
Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are an important therapeutic option in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Tan et al report on a consensus meeting that was held to discuss add-on therapy of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with diabetes mellitus treated with insulin. The authors provide practical guidance to help physicians recognise, monitor, and treat patients with diabetes mellitus using SGLT2 inhibitors in combination with insulin therapy.

Survey on common reference intervals for general chemistry analytes in Hong Kong
Reference intervals are essential tool for proper interpretation of results. Globally, common reference intervals are introduced to avoid confusion and enhance patient management across different laboratories. Chan et al address the local lack of such common reference intervals. The authors surveyed 10 chemical pathology laboratories and found wide variations in reference intervals implemented. The authors recommend common reference intervals for general chemistry analytes in Hong Kong to prevent interpreter confusion, improve electronic data transfer, and unite laboratory practice. The authors also propose a framework for the implementation of such common reference intervals.

Pioneer of nursing reforms: an interview with Prof. Frances Wong
In 2019, the “Healthcare for Society” section was relaunched with a broader scope to showcase include the generous efforts not only of doctors, but also other healthcare professionals in Hong Kong. This interview with Prof. Frances Kam-yuet Wong provides some insight into her valuable contributions to the nursing profession in Hong Kong and beyond.
We strongly encourage readers to participate in voluntary work. Volunteering allows healthcare workers to connect with the community and make it a better place for everyone.
HKMJ also requests readers to recommend healthcare workers who have contributed to meaningful volunteer work for an interview. If you have a nomination, please contact the HKMJ Editorial Office ([email protected]).
Dissemination reports are concise informative reports of health-related research supported by the Health and Medical Research Fund (and its predecessor funds) administered by the Food and Health Bureau. In this edition, we present 12 dissemination reports of projects related to stroke, neurology, congenital disorders, and vision science.
In addition, this edition includes an overview of the Health Research Symposium 2019, which was organised by the Food and Health Bureau and was held on 12 June 2019 at the HKAM Jockey Club Building. The event provided a platform to facilitate dialogue among local researchers on their latest achievements in health-related research and to learn from international experiences. The Symposium was attended by some 500 delegates, including 119 poster presenters. The Symposium ended with an award ceremony to acknowledge outstanding research that has influenced health policy and practice in Hong Kong.
