Professor Lau Chak-sing

Prof. Lau Chak-sing is President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, having previously served as Vice-President (Education and Examinations) between 2011 and 2016. He is Chair and Daniel CK Yu Professor in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong and Honorary Chief of Service of the Department of Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.

Prof. Lau has been at the forefront of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. Prior to his current positions, he was Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, and Chairman of the Examinations Committee and Chairman of the Specialty Board in Rheumatology/Immunology & Allergy of the Hong Kong College of Physicians.

During his tenure as Vice-President, Prof. Lau was involved in a number of important initiatives in training policies and postgraduate medical education of the Academy. With the scope of medical specialties rapidly expanding, Prof. Lau recognises the importance of cross-College training and accreditation. He led the setting up of a Working Group on training in Genetic and Genomics involving the Colleges of Community Medicine, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Paediatricians, Pathologists and Physicians. In addition, he was actively engaged in the establishment of the Academy’s Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine in 2013 and the Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute in 2014 - two initiatives funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Committed to promoting postgraduate medical education, he also initiated the Medical Education Conference in 2015 which has now become an annual major event of the Academy.

On regulation of clinical practice, a Working Group on Credentialling at the Academy was set up to engage Colleges to develop credentialling policies and define scope of practice. In addition, Prof. Lau represents the Academy as a Member of the Department of Health Project Steering Committee on Standards for Ambulatory Facilities to devise regulatory standards for ambulatory facilities.

One of the goals of Prof. Lau’s tenure as the President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine is to foster further exchange of clinical knowledge and experience locally and internationally, for maintaining high standards of medical specialist training in Hong Kong.  Besides building strong links with medical colleges and academies worldwide and the two local medical schools, he endeavours to actively engage Fellows and trainees to contribute to the continual development of postgraduate clinical training in Hong Kong, as well as other scholarly activities of the Academy.
