The
Hong Kong Academy of Medicine is the highest academic organization in Hong
Kong that is established by statute in 1993. It has the mandate to
maintain the standard of specialist training and specialist continuing medical education (CME) and continuous professional development (CPD) in
the territory. The Academy has 15 Medical and Dental Colleges and over
5,000 Fellows who have gone through at least 6 years of structured
training in accredited centers, and have passed the intermediate and the
exit examinations. To reach
international bench-marking, these examinations are either conducted with
international partners or have external expert examiners. Within these 15 Colleges, there are currently
60 specialties. The
Academy assists the Medical Council of Hong Kong, the Registration body,
in the maintenance of the Specialist Register (SR) since its inception in
1997. Fellows of the Academy
of Medicine are eligible to be registered in the SR. The Academy also
plays the role of vetting of qualifications for their eligibility not only
for the SR, but also for temporary medical registration and quotable
qualifications of the Medical Council of Hong Kong. The
Academy takes the lead in the development of CME/CPD not only for its
Fellows, but also for the general practitioners who join the CME scheme of
the Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK). It is an Administrator, Accreditor and Provider of this MCHK
scheme. To enhance and
facilitate CME/CPD, the Academy has developed web learning named the International Network for Continuing Medical Education & Continuous Professional Development
(iCMECPD). This iCMECPD
is recognized
and funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region (HKSAR), and has international connections with Academies and
Colleges such as Royal College of Physicians,
Royal College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine Singapore, Academy of
Medicine of Malaysia, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal
Australasian College of Surgeons, and Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada. iCMECPD
is under the purview of a CME/CPD Office which will
advance collaboration with sister organizations in life-long learning, and
will conduct research on knowledge transfer. The Academy is taking an active role in the health-care provision in Hong Kong through its involvement in the postgraduate training of doctors and dentists, and through its advice to the HKSAR on matters related to health and health regulations. The Academy strives to serve the Community of Hong Kong, China, and the World.
