Annual General Meeting - 5 December 2013

Council has decided to hold this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 5 December 2013 (Thu) to admit new Fellows. The AGM will be held at 7:30 pm at the Council Chamber, 10/F, HKAM Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. All Fellows are welcome to attend.

HKAM 20th Anniversary The Academy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-11 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times" Prominent speakers from overseas, including Dr Margaret Chan Director General of World Health Organisation, will deliver key lectures at the Congress. Medical Simulation: Trends and Applications (10-11 December 2013)

CME/CPD Reminder

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2013. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Starting from 1 January 2008, no more than 75 points can be awarded for passive participation in a 3-year cycle. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.

New CMECPD Guidelines

A revised set of CMECPD Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Major changes are in Section 6, in which Fellows are strongly advised to maintain a balanced CMECPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in category 6.11 (Quality Assurance, Audits and Activities for Improvement of Patient/Medical Care) in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPD activities. HKAM Open Day on 5 October 2013

To celebrate Academy’s achievements and to promote the importance of our role in the community to the younger generations, an Open Day was organised on 5 October 2013 in the lead-up to the Anniversary Congress in December. The theme was “Climbing the Healthcare Ladder”, and the aim was to provide comprehensive information about the work of the Academy and its 15 Colleges to prospective students from secondary schools, their career advisors, as well as current medical and dental students. The students were given the rare opportunity to meet with trainers and trainees in various specialities and learn more about pursuing a career in medical and dental field.

Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, was Guest-of-Honour at the Kick-off Ceremony. Other guests included Dr. Constance Chan, Director of Health; Dr. Esther Ho, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters; Prof. Gabriel Leung, Dean of the University of Hong Kong’s Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Anthony Chan, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Prof. Edward Lo, representatives, Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong; Prof. Faith Ho, Chairman, Education and Research Committee, Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences Society; and Dr. Pamela Leung, Chairman, Management Committee, Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences Society. Presidents and representatives of all 15 Academy Colleges also participated in this special event. The Open Day was a great success, attracting more than 540 students and teachers to attend. National Day cocktail, 1 October 2013

The Academy President was invited to attend the National Day cocktail on 1 October 2013.

6th APHRS & CardioRhythm 2013, 3 October 2013

Dr. Donald Li was invited to deliver a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Sessions (APRHS) & CardioRhythm 2013 congress at HKCEC on 3 October 2013. This major conference in arrhythmia management looked at recent technological advances and some latest treatments for patients with the goal of combating the disease in a global level.

Visit to the National Health and Family Planning Commission in Beijing, 11 October 2013

The Academy President led a delegation of representatives from the Academy to visit the National Health and Family Planning Commission (previously known as “Ministry of Health”) on 11 October 2013 in Beijing. Members included the following: Dr. Donald Li (President, HKAM), Prof. TF Fok (Vice President, HKAM), Dr. CC Lau (Honorary Secretary, HKAM), Dr. YF Chow (President, College of Anaesthesiologists), Dr. SP Mak (President, College of Community Medicine), Dr. SK Chan (Vice President, College of Dental Surgeons), Dr. HF Ho (President, College of Emergency Medicine), Dr. Ares Leung (President, College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), Dr. WK Ngai (Past President, College of Orthopaedic Surgeons), and Dr. SN Wong (President, College of Paediatricians).

The delegates met with Vice Minister Sun Zhi Gang and his colleagues. At the meeting, Dr. WK Ngai reported on the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ collaboration with their Mainland counterparts to Vice Minister Sun. Vice Minister Sun expressed much support for the pilot scheme started by the Ministry and the Academy in 2005, and stated that the collaboration with the Academy should be extended. He believes that a high standard must be set to maintain professionalism. The meeting was fruitful and the Academy look forward to further discussions with the Ministry in the near future.

Expert Witness Training Course

The Academy of Experts (AoE) will run several Expert Witness Training Courses in Hong Kong in November 2013. The HKAM Council has agreed to be supporting organization for this course. Timely Application for Renewal of Practising Certificate

The Medical Council of Hong Kong has requested the Academy to help remind all Fellows that the annual practising certificates of doctors for the year 2013 will expire on 31 December 2013. Please make timely application for renewal of your annual practising certificates for the year 2014 if you will be practising beyond the expiry date. Please refer to the letter from the Medical Council for further details.

Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium 2013, 14-15 December 2013 The Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium 2013 (ASM2013), organized by the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, will be held from 14th -15th December 2013 at The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
