Election of Council Members
The term of office of the 3 Elected and 2 Co-opted Council Members will expire at the conclusion of this year's annual general meeting. The election process has started in July, and results will be announced at the AGM to be held in December 2013. Fellows should have received the nomination form earlier. Completed nomination form must reach the Academy office before 5 p.m. on 13 September 2013. |

HKAM 20th Anniversary
The Academy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-11 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times"
The HKSAR Chief Executive, Mr. CY Leung, has accepted to be the Guest of Honour for the Opening. The scientific programme is being worked out and would be published in due course.

CME/CPD Reminder
The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2013. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Starting from 1 January 2008, no more than 75 points can be awarded for passive participation in a 3-year cycle. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.
New CMECPD Guidelines
A revised set of CMECPD Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Major changes are in Section 6, in which Fellows are strongly advised to maintain a balanced CMECPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in category 6.11 (Quality Assurance, Audits and Activities for Improvement of Patient/Medical Care) in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPD activities. Annual Subscriptions
Demand notes for the 2013 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.
Reminder:
- All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September 2013. According to Bylaw 6.4:
If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is not received by the Academy within 9 months after such payment falls due, despite two written reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automatically forfeit his membership.
- It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount.
- For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer / credit card, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts or credit card automatically.
- Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note.
- Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit written applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates next year. MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award
Nature of the Award
The MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote the subject of patient safety, risk reduction, quality and professional standards, and medical ethics.
Who is Eligible for the Award?
Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of the following topics, are eligible for the Award:
- Patient safety
- Risk reduction
- Quality and professional standards
- Medical ethics
Criteria for Submission
Papers could be submitted in any of the following formats:
- paper for presentation in a conference (not previously presented at a conference)
- paper for publication in medical/scientific journals (papers submitted should be original manuscripts and not previously published)
- essay or a review article (not previously published)
- original research (original research should have been approved by an institutional ethics committee where appropriate). The Panel of Judges reserves the right to reject any application on grounds that the research was unethical.
Presentation of the Award
The Award (a plaque and a cheque for HK$20,000) will be presented to the winning author. The Winner of the Award will be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

Overseas Meetings
The Academy President Dr. Donald Li led a delegation to Singapore to attend the 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress cum 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine from 22 to 24 August 2013. Members of the delegation included College Presidents Dr. Chow Yu-fat (HKCA), Dr. Mak Sin-ping (HKCCM), Prof. Edward Lo (CDSHK), Dr. Ho Hiu-fai (HKCEM), Dr. Ares Leung (HKCOG), Dr. Chow Pak-chin (COHKP), Dr. Wong Sik-nin (HKCPaed), Dr. Michael Suen (HKCPath), Dr. Patrick Li (HKCP), Dr. Law Chun-key (HKCR), Dr. Luk Hung-to (CSHK), as well as the Academy’s Past President Prof. Grace Tang, Vice-President (General Affairs) Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Honorary Secretary Dr. Lau Chor-chiu and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Elmer Wan.

Dr. Donald Li gave a talk about multiple co-morbidities in Hong Kong besides making welcoming speeches at the Opening Ceremony and the Singapore Academy’s conferment ceremony. A number of HKAM Fellows were also nominated by their respective College as speakers at the Congress: Dr. Edmond Pow (CDSHK), Prof. Leung Tak Yeung (HKCOG), Prof. NG Pak Cheung (HKCPaed), Dr. NG Wai Man (HKCR), and Dr Albert CHAN (CSHK). A joint meeting of the 3 academies’ councils was later held.
During the 2-day stay in Singapore, some delegates joined the Academy’s representatives to visit 4 simulation training centres: Singapore General Hospital’s Institute for Medical Simulation, National University of Singapore’s Centre for Healthcare Simulation, Singapore Armed Forces’ Medical Simulation Training Centre, and the National Healthcare Group’s Simulation and Integrated Medical Advancement Centre.
Visits by Overseas Guests
The President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG), Dr. Frank Dunn, visited Hong Kong in late August and took the chance to meet with their Fellows in Hong Kong. A reception hosted by the Royal College, followed by a dinner gathering hosted by the Academy in honour of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Dunn, were arranged on 28 August 2013. Guests included presidents and past presidents of the Colleges of Physicians (HKCP) and Surgeons (CSHK) such as Prof. Richard Yu, Prof. TK Chan, Prof. K.N. Lai, and Dr. Patrick Li, from HKCP, Prof. Arthur Li, Dr. H.T. Luk from CSHK. The Academy’s President Dr. Donald Li, Vice-President (GA) Prof. T.F. Fok, and Honorary Secretary Dr. C.C. Lau also attended.
Expert Witness Training Course
The Academy of Experts (AoE) will run several Expert Witness Training Courses in Hong Kong in November 2013. The HKAM Council has agreed to be supporting organization for this course. Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium 2013, 14-15 December 2013
The Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium 2013 (ASM2013), organized by the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, will be held from 14th -15th December 2013 at The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
