Election of Council Members

The term of office of the 3 Elected and 2 Co-opted Council Members will expire at the conclusion of this year's annual general meeting. The election process has started in July, and results will be announced at the AGM to be held in December 2013. Fellows should have received the nomination form earlier. Completed nomination form must reach the Academy office before 5 p.m. on 13 September 2013.

 


 

2013 Honours List

The Government announced this year's Honours List on 1 July 2013. A number of Academy Fellows are on the Honour List. Dr. Michael MAK Hoi-hung and Prof. Joseph LAU Wan-yee have been awarded Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS). Prof. Thomas CHAN Yan-keung (PH), Prof. Michael LI Ka-wah (SU), and Dr. PAN Pey-chyou (PS) have been awarded Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS). Dr. LAU Chor-chiu (EM) has been awarded Government Flying Service Medal for Meritorious Service. Dr. Albert KONG Yim-fai (PD), Prof. WONG Tze-wai (CM) and Dr. LAI Kang-yiu (PH) have been awarded the Medal of Honour (MH). Dr. Daniel CHIU Cheung-shing (PD) and Dr. Dicky CHUNG Wai-sau (PS) received the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service. Congratulations to all the recipients!

 


 

CME/CPD Reminder

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2013. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Starting from 1 January 2008, no more than 75 points can be awarded for passive participation in a 3-year cycle. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.

 


 

Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2013 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.

Reminder:

  1. All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September 2013. According to Bylaw 6.4:
  2. If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is not received by the Academy within 9 months after such payment falls due, despite two written reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automatically forfeit his membership.

  3. It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount.
  4. For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer / credit card, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts or credit card automatically.
  5. Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note.
  6. Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit written applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates next year. New CMECPD Guidelines

A revised set of CMECPD Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Major changes are in Section 6, in which Fellows are strongly advised to maintain a balanced CMECPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in category 6.11 (Quality Assurance, Audits and Activities for Improvement of Patient/Medical Care) in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPD activities. MPS Hong Kong

MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award

Nature of the Award
The MPS-HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote the subject of patient safety, risk reduction, quality and professional standards, and medical ethics.

Who is Eligible for the Award?
Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of the following topics, are eligible for the Award:

  • Patient safety
  • Risk reduction
  • Quality and professional standards
  • Medical ethics

Presentation of the Award
The Award (a plaque and a cheque for HK$20,000) will be presented to the winning author. The Winner of the Award will be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

Application will open on 15 June 2013 and close on 31 August 2013.

Media Luncheon on 15 July 2013

The Academy organized a Luncheon with the media on 15 July 2013. At the lunch, Dr. Donald Li, President of the Academy, introduced the Officers and Presidents /representatives of the 11 attending Colleges to the media with the aim of strengthening networking ties with the media. Apart from the lunch gathering, the Academy also invited a few representatives from different Colleges to speak on topics related to summer traveling and teeth whitening, conveying some soft medical messages to the general public through the media. Dr. Donald Li chaired the press briefing while Dr. CL Law, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee; Dr. SP Mak from the College of Community Medicine; Dr. Raymond Lee from the College of Dental Surgeons; and Dr. HF Ho from the College of Emergency Medicine gave keynote speeches on the various types of summer travel issues, including:

  • types of medicine to pack when traveling
  • how to deal with diarrhoea
  • what kind of insect spray and sun block to choose
  • what kind of commonly known infectious diseases
  • how to handle heat stroke and other injuries
  • other facts regarding teeth whitening.

The lunch had a very good response with 39 press members in attendance and 19 media reporting on information from the luncheon the following day.

 


 

Events attended by the HKAM President

Dr. Donald Li, attended a high level roundtable discussion in July, which was attended by former PRC Minister of Health, Prof. Chen Zhu, and international experts from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan and UK. Dr. Li was appointed by the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission as Advisor for the General Practitioner / Family Doctors System in Shanghai for a term of 3 years.

With the Director of the Shanghai Health and Family Planning, Prof. Xu Jianguang (徐建光) and the President of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), Prof. Michael Kidd.

Dr. Donald Li conducted an International Panel Discussion on Primary Care development at the 2013 Oriental Family Doctors Forum in Shanghai from 19 - 22 July 2013. He was also appointed Honorary Advisory Professor of the Medical College of Fudan University in Shanghai.

 


 

Expert Witness Training Course

The Academy of Experts (AoE) will run several Expert Witness Training Courses in Hong Kong in November 2013. The HKAM Council has agreed to be supporting organization for this course. HKAM 20th Anniversary

The Academy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-10 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times"

The HKSAR Chief Executive, Mr. CY Leung, has accepted to be the Guest of Honour for the Opening. The scientific programme is being worked out and would be published in due course.

2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress / 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine

The 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress and 47th SMCM will be held in Singapore on 23-24 August 2013. The three Academies in Hong Kong (HKAM), Malaysia (AMM) and Singapore (AMS) agreed to have tripartite congress in every three years starting from 2010. The first tripartite congress was hosted by HKAM and successfully held in Hong Kong in 2010.
