Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2013 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.

Reminder:

  1. All payments must be received by the Academy before 30 September 2013. According to Bylaw 6.4:
  2. If a member's fee or any other moneys due by a member to the Academy is not received by the Academy within 9 months after such payment falls due, despite two written reminders by the Academy to pay, the member shall automatically forfeit his membership.

  3. It is Council's policy that late subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount.
  4. For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer / credit card, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts or credit card automatically.
  5. Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note.
  6. Fellows residing outside Hong Kong or have reached the age of 65 and have retired from all remunerative practice/job/business must submit written applications for reduced rates before 31 December if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates next year. Inaugural Ceremony of the Hong Kong Institute of Volunteers

The Academy’s President, Dr. Donald Li, was conferred an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Volunteers (HKIoV) in recognition of his significant contribution to the community, making great difference to the society through volunteering services.

HKIoV is a new initiative by the Agency for Volunteer Service (AVS) supported by the government to advance volunteerism and promote excellence in volunteering through a membership system of recognition, standards setting and accreditation, research and knowledge transfer, by which sustainable development of volunteerism may be enhanced. The Hon Mrs Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet-ngor, Chief Secretary for Administration, HKSAR, officiated at their Inauguration and Conferment Ceremony on 21 March 2013. One of Academy’s Past Presidents, Dr. C.H. Leong, also received an Honorary Fellowship at the ceremony that day.

 


 

Council Dinner in March

The Academy invited representatives from the Hospital Authority to a dinner with Council members on 21st March 2013. Dinner with Hong Kong Public Doctors' Association

Dr. Donald Li was invited as Academy’s President by the Public Doctors’ Association to a dinner on 26 March 2013 with Dr. Kenneth Fu Kam Fung (President), Dr. Pierre Chan (Vice President) and some council members.

 


 

World Health Day 2013

Each year, a theme is selected to celebrate the founding of World Health Organization (WHO) on 7 April. The theme for 2013 is hypertension, a very important public health issue in Hong Kong. The Department of Health will start a territory-wide publicity and public education campaign from April onwards. The Academy is a supporter of the campaign, which calls for specific actions:

  • to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of high blood pressure;
  • to encourage healthy living to prevent high blood pressure;
  • to motivate adults to check their blood pressure and provide advice
  • accordingly; and
  • to provide treatment, guidance and support for optimal control of blood
  • pressure and prevention of complications.

Temporary Arrangements for Dining Services on 2/F

Due to renovation and maintenance works in the kitchen and Dining Room of the HKAM Building, there will be some temporary arrangements for dining services on 2/F. The Dining Room will be closed from 10 April 2013 to early June 2013. During this period, the Function Room on 2/F will be used as temporary dining area, serving only Academy Fellows, staff working in this building, and staff of the Grantham Hospital. There will be no 'Weekly Menu'; only daily specials and fried rice / noodles will be served from Monday to Friday, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. No services will be provided on weekends and public holidays. The Academy apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

 


 

HKAM 20th Anniversary

The Academy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-10 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times"

The HKSAR Chief Executive, Mr. CY Leung, has accepted to be the Guest of Honour for the Opening. The scientific programme is being worked out and would be published in due course.

2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress / 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine

The 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress and 47th SMCM will be held in Singapore on 23-24 August 2013. The three Academies in Hong Kong (HKAM), Malaysia (AMM) and Singapore (AMS) agreed to have tripartite congress in every three years starting from 2010. The first tripartite congress was hosted by HKAM and successfully held in Hong Kong in 2010. The theme of the 2nd Tripartite Congress, to be hosted by AMS, will be "The New Reality in Medicine - Caring for Patients with Multiple Co-Morbidites" For details of the congress, please visit the congress website at http://www.smcm-ams.com/index.html.

The 26th Fellowship Conferment Ceremony
and
The 24th Dr. Sun Yat Sen Oration

Hong Kong College of Family Physicians

The College is holding "The 26th Fellowship Conferment Ceremony and the 24th Dr. Sun Yat Sen Oration" on 15th June 2013 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building.

The successful candidates of Conjoint Examination would be conferred Fellowships, and the successful candidates of Diploma in Family Medicine and the Exit Examination would be granted certificates. In this very important occasion, Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, would deliver the 24th Dr. Sun Yat Sen Oration to the audience.

Lymphoma Conference, 6-7 April 2013, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine

Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKS&H) will co-host the Lymphoma Conference with University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) on 6-7 April 2013 at Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The conference will provide timely topics that cover monoclonal antibody therapy and other novel agents, PET/CT imaging, FISH and molecular testing, FNA, chromosome analysis, evaluation of splenomegaly, immunodeficiency related lymphoma and multiparametric immmunophenotyping. Lymphoma Conference will appeal to a broad range of medical professionals including physicians, pediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, scientists and technologists in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
