Proposed Amendments to HKAM Bylaws

A postal ballot has been conducted to update and tidy up some HKAM bylaws after they were reviewed by the Constitutions Committee with the assistance of the Honorary Legal Advisor. Sufficient number of ballots were received by the deadline of 31 October 2012. The votes will be counted in the presence of an Auditor in early November and the results will be announced in due course.

The Academy Council would like to thank all the Fellows who have returned their votes and those who helped in this postal ballot exercise. Your continued support is crucial for the Academy to achieve its aims and objectives.

 


 

New Subspecialty – Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases

The Education Committee and Council of the Academy have approved a new subspecialty "Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases" under the College of Paediatricians.

Related documents including training programme and curriculum submitted by the College were endorsed by the Education Committee.

MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety

The MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote on the subject of patient safety and risk reduction.

Four submissions have been received for this year’s award. The winner of this year’s Award is Dr. LO Wing Kee. His paper is "Use of Handheld Digital Device at Bedside to Reduce Medication Errors".

Dr. Lo will receive the award during the Academy’s conferment ceremony on 14 December 2012.

 


 

International Medical Education Leaders Forum (IMELF 2012)

The IMELF 2012, organized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, was held in Ottawa on 16 October 2012. Attended by around 100 invited participants from all over the world, the forum focused on several hot educational issues, e.g. time-limited certification, and impact of restricting resident duty hours on training. The Academy Vice President, Dr Donald Li, Dr Luk Hung To (College of Surgeons), Prof. Paul Lai (College of Surgeons), Dr. Chow Yu Fat (College of Anaesthesiologists) and Dr. Tung Wai Kit (College of Emergency Medicine) attended this forum.

 


 

David Todd Oration

This year's David Todd Oration will be held on 14 December 2012, in conjunction with the Fellowship Conferment ceremony and AGM. The Academy is honoured to have Prof. Sum-ping Lee, Dean, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, to be speaker. His oration topic is "Whither Medical Humanities?".

HKAM 20th Anniversary

It will be the Academy's 20th Anniversary next year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-10 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times" The Organising Committee, chaired by the Vice-President (General Affairs), is working on the programme for the celebration.

Academy Policy on Reduced Subscription Rates

Fellows are requested to note that reduced rates (retired, overseas) will be effective from the next subscription year after submission of an application. Eligible Fellows should therefore submit their applications before 31 December 2012 if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates in year 2013. For those who are aged over 65 as of 31 December 2012, reduced rates will be granted automatically, and they do not need to submit application. Details of the policy can be found in the Member's Area of the iCMECPD website (www.icmecpd.hk).

 


 

Expert Witness Training Course

The Academy of Experts (AoE) will run several Expert Witness Training Courses in Hong Kong in November. The HKAM Council has agreed to be supporting organization for this course. 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress / 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine

The 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress and 47th SMCM will be held in Singapore on 23-24 August 2013. The three Academies in Hong Kong (HKAM), Malaysia (AMM) and Singapore (AMS) agreed to have tripartite congress in every three years starting from 2010. The first tripartite congress was hosted by HKAM and successfully held in Hong Kong in 2010. Advanced & Difficult Airway Management Workshops for doctors (ADAM-D)

The Institute of Clinical Simulation of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists will organize Advanced & Difficult Airway Management Workshops for doctors (ADAM-D) at the North District Hospital on 30 Jun 2012, 29 Sep 2012 and 29 Dec 2012 respectively. The workshop aims at providing the participants with knowledge and skill in managing difficult airways. The target participants are emergency physicians, intensive care physicians, 1st year anaesthetic trainees, medical physicians, pediatricians, ENT surgeons & general surgeons who are responsible for the acute airway management of their patients. Lymphoma Conference, 6-7 April 2013, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine

Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKS&H) will co-host the Lymphoma Conference with University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) on 6-7 April 2013 at Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The conference will provide timely topics that cover monoclonal antibody therapy and other novel agents, PET/CT imaging, FISH and molecular testing, FNA, chromosome analysis, evaluation of splenomegaly, immunodeficiency related lymphoma and multiparametric immmunophenotyping. Lymphoma Conference will appeal to a broad range of medical professionals including physicians, pediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, scientists and technologists in Hong Kong and Mainland China. 2012 Health Manpower Survey

The Department of Health will embark on a new round of Health Manpower Survey (HMS) on registered doctors in September 2012. The HMS has been conducted regularly since it ws first introduced in 1980, with an aim to collect up-to-date information on the size, characteristics and employment status of healthcare personnel. Information will be collected via self-administered questionnaires which will be sent together with the letters for renewal of practicing certificate for registered doctors.
