David Todd Oration
This year's David Todd Oration will be held on 14 December 2012, in conjunction with the Fellowship Conferment ceremony and AGM. The Academy is honoured to have Prof. Sum-ping Lee, Dean, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, to be speaker. His oration topic is "Whither Medical Humanities".

HKAM 20th Anniversary It will be the Academy's 20th Anniversary next year. A 20th Anniversary Congress will be held on 8-10 December 2013 to celebrate the occasion. The theme will be "Manpower needs in medicine: moving with the times" The Organising Committee, chaired by the Vice-President (General Affairs), is working on the programme for the celebration. Academy Policy on Reduced Subscription Rates
Fellows are requested to note that reduced rates (retired, overseas) will be effective from the next subscription year after submission of an application. Eligible Fellows should therefore submit their applications before 31 December 2012 if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates in year 2013. For those who are aged over 65 as of 31 December 2012, reduced rates will be granted automatically, and they do not need to submit application. Details of the policy can be found in the Member's Area of the iCMECPD website (www.icmecpd.hk).
Medicine and the media - public interest or private matters
The HKAM-MPS seminar was successfully held on 7 September 2012 and well attended by about 40 Fellows. Chaired by Dr C T Hung, the seminar invited four speakers, Dr Ares Leung from Union Hospital, Ms Tam Chung Yin from Mingpao, Dr Bernard Murphy from Howse Williams Bowers and Dr Stephanie Bown from MPS to share their experience and views with participants on media issues including public interest versus personal privacy. The Academy would like to thank the speakers and Fellows who have taken time to join the seminar.

Press Briefing for Pain Management
The Academy held a press briefing on 18 September 2012 to enhance public awareness on the harmful effects of chronic pain, the proper way of pain management as well as the importance of receiving multi-disciplinary treatment. Dr. C.T. Hung, Ex Vice-President (Education & Examinations) and Dr. Steven Wong Ho Shan from the College of Anaesthesiologists, were the coordinators of this press briefing. The speakers included Dr. Chan Sai Kwing from the College of Dental Surgeons, Dr. Tsoi Tak Hong from the College of Physicians, Prof. Kenneth Cheung Man Chee from the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Dr. David Sun Tin Fung from the College of Surgeons. It was pointed out that allowing a pain to persist for over 3 months without proper treatment may cause it to develop into chronic pain, which will not just affect the sufferers both physically and emotionally, but also become a huge burden to the caregivers and society as a whole. The press briefing was attended by 11 members of the press and reports appeared in 12 printed/electronic media. Some of the speakers were also interviewed separately afterwards.

2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress / 47th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine
The 2nd AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress and 47th SMCM will be held in Singapore on 23-24 August 2013. The three Academies in Hong Kong (HKAM), Malaysia (AMM) and Singapore (AMS) agreed to have tripartite congress in every three years starting from 2010. The first tripartite congress was hosted by HKAM and successfully held in Hong Kong in 2010. 2012 Health Manpower Survey The Department of Health will embark on a new round of Health Manpower Survey (HMS) on registered doctors in September 2012. The HMS has been conducted regularly since it ws first introduced in 1980, with an aim to collect up-to-date information on the size, characteristics and employment status of healthcare personnel. Information will be collected via self-administered questionnaires which will be sent together with the letters for renewal of practicing certificate for registered doctors. The deadline for submission of questionnaire is 31 December 2012.
