Extraordinary General Meeting - 21 June 2012

Council has decided to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on 21 June 2012 (Thu) to admit new Fellows. The EGM will be held at 7:30 pm at the Council Chamber, 10/F HKAM Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. All Fellows are welcome to attend.

MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety

Nature of the Award
The MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote on the subject of patient safety and risk reduction.

Who is Eligible for the Award?
Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of the following topics, are eligible for the Award:

  • Patient safety
  • Risk reduction
  • Quality and professional standards
  • Medical ethics

Presentation of the Award
The Award (a plaque and a cheque of HK$20,000) will be presented to the winning author. Application will open and close on dates to be announced by the Academy each year. The Winner of the Award will be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

Application will open from 15 June 2012 and close on 15 August 2012.

2012 Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2012 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please be reminded that it is Council's policy that subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible. Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note. For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts automatically.

 


 

Press Briefing on the Harmful Effects of Alcohol Consumption in Hong Kong

The Academy held a press briefing on 22 April 2012 at the Academy Building to enhance public awareness on the harmful effects of alcohol and to urge for joint efforts by concerned parties to propose and implement relevant measures for better public health protection. Representatives from around 19 media groups attended the briefing.

During the one-hour briefing, the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Academy, Dr. Law Chi-lim, along with Dr. Mak Sin-ping from the College of Community Medicine, Dr. Cheung Wai-him from the College of Psychiatrists, Dr. Li Chung-ki from the College of Physicians, Dr. Chan Ming-wai from the College of Family Physicians, and Dr. Tsui Kwok-leung from the College of Emergency Medicine, presented data and facts related to the increase of alcohol consumption and the harmful effects of alcohol consumption at the individual and societal levels. They appealed for increase public education about the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on health and the cost to the community. They also encouraged individuals, families, organizations and communities to join forces and participate in building a healthy environment, reducing the burden created by alcohol on the society and on the healthcare profession.

International Congress of College and Academy Presidents and Masters

Dr Donald Li, Vice-President (General Affairs),attended the International Congress of College and Academy Presidents and Masters, Cape Town organized by the College of Medicines of South Africa (logo attached) in April on behalf of the Academy. He met up with many Presidents of Colleges in multi-specialties including,surgeons, medicine, O&G Psychiatry, A&E, Family Medicine etc. from U.K. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and others around the world. He made a presentation of the structure and work of our Academy. and also a plenary presentation on "Medical Migration and Collaborative Support for the Development of Health Care and Education in the Developing World - a Hong Kong Perspective" . He also engaged in discussions on Medical Litigation, Recertification, medical education and research as well as medical manpower.

 


 

Leader of the Year 2011 Award

Prof John Leong, Past President of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, was awarded ‘Leader of the Year 2011’ in March this year, in the Education/Research category. The event was organised by the Sing Tao News Corporation Limited. The Awards started in 1994 to recognise the contribution of Hong Kong’s outstanding leaders to its success and prosperity, and to establish role models for the young generation. Last year the awardees included Prof Shing-tung Yau of Harvard University in this category, and Mr Andrew Kwok-nang Li in the Community/Public Affairs category. Congratulations to Prof Leong!

 


Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees

The Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine recognizes excellence in research done by doctors who are in specialist training. Submission deadline for the year 2012 award is 31 July 2012 (postmark). Interested trainee doctors can download the following documents (PDF and MS Word format) for reference and use.

The College is holding "The 25th Fellowship Conferment Ceremony and the 23rd Dr. Sun Yat Sen Oration" on 3 June 2012 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building.

The successful candidates of Conjoint Examination would be conferred Fellowships; and the successful candidates of Diploma in Family Medicine and the Exit Examination would be granted certificates. In this very important occasion, Professor LEE Sum Ping, Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, would deliver the 23rd Dr. Sun Yat Sen Oration to the audience.

The 2nd IDKD (An Interactive Course in Diagnostic Imaging) Intensive Course in Hong Kong, 16-19 June 2012

The 2nd IDKD (International Diagnostic Course Davos) Intensive Course in Hong Kong, in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong College of Radiologists, will be held on 16-19 June 2012 at Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. This intensive course, featuring 14 different workshops spread over 3 1/2 days, covering imaging of important diseases of the abdomen and pelvis. In addition, “hot topics” in Medical Imaging including new developments, overviews and interventional techniques will be presented by renowned experts in highlight lectures.

Advanced & Difficult Airway Management Workshops for doctors (ADAM-D)

The Institute of Clinical Simulation of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists will organize Advanced & Difficult Airway Management Workshops for doctors (ADAM-D) at the North District Hospital on 30 Jun 2012, 29 Sep 2012 and 29 Dec 2012 respectively. The workshop aims at providing the participants with knowledge and skill in managing difficult airways. The target participants are emergency physicians, intensive care physicians, 1st year anaesthetic trainees, medical physicians, pediatricians, ENT surgeons & general surgeons who are responsible for the acute airway management of their patients. "Primary Care - Family Doctor as Your Health Partner" (基層醫療 - 各有所「醫」專題比賽)

The Primary Care Office of the Department of Health, together with the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, have organised a themed competition entitled "Primary Care - Family Doctor as Your Health Partner" (基層醫療 - 各有所「醫」專題比賽) aiming to raise the awareness of the general public about the importance of primary care and the family doctor concept.

Online public voting for "The Most Popular Entry Online Award" has begun. A total of 30 entries have been selected for the public voting. HKIIC2012: 中醫老年醫學 Chinese Medicine in Geriatrics

The Hospital Authority and the Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine (HKAIM) are jointly organising the Hong Kong International Integrative Medicine Conference 2012. The conference will be on "Chinese Medicine in Geriatrics" and the primary aim of the conference is to promote the scientific prescription of Chinese medicinal herbs in the elderly with common chronic illnesses, and to foster collaborative research in the many related clinical and pre-clinical areas.
