The Election papers were sent to Fellows on 14 October 2011. Fellows who wish to make votes should return the voting form by the deadline. All voting papers must be received by the Academy not later than 5 pm on 7 November 2011.

MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety

The MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote on the subject of patient safety and risk reduction.

Nine submissions have been received for this year’s award. The Panel of Judges has decided that the winner be Dr. Alexander Chiu, whose paper is "Root Cause Analysis Improves Patient Safety: A descriptive study of Root Cause Analysis Framework applied to clinical incident investigation in a University Affiliated Hospital".

Dr. Chiu will present his winning paper at a seminar on 2 December 2011 (see item below)

David Todd Oration

This year's David Todd Oration will be held on 16 December 2011, in conjunction with the Fellowship Conferment ceremony and AGM. The Academy is honoured to have Prof. Dennis Lo, FRS, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine & Professor of Chemical Pathology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to be speaker. His oration topic is "Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis: from dream to reality".

The Royal Society of Medicine

Collaboration on Reciprocal Facilities between the Academy and Royal Society of Medicine

The Academy and RSM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) since 2007 for reciprocal use of facilities by Fellows and members of the two organisations. Under this MOU, RSM will allow HKAM Fellows to use the accommodation facilities (Chandos House http://www.chandoshouse.co.uk/ only), restaurants, bars and lounges of the RSM when they travel to London . The services will be provided to HKAM Fellows on pay-on-use basis by the user.Fellows who wish to use the facilities of RSM can contact the Academy at [email protected]. The Academy will provide a letter of introduction for authentication of Fellowship status at reservation for facilities.

RSM would also like to extend its membership to the Academy Fellows. With support from the Academy, the RSM President Professor Parveen Kumar is now providing a special joining offer for the Academy Fellows. HKAM Fellows will not have to pay a joining fee (only the annual membership subscription). 20th Anniversary Scientific Meeting cum HM Lui Memorial Fund 10th Anniversary Symposium, 10 December 2011

The Hong Kong College of Paediatricians is celebrating its 20th Anniversary on 10th Decemeber, 2011 (Saturday). This will be a very busy day with a whole-day Annual Scientific Meeting with the theme, Recent Advances in Paediatrics. There are eminent speakers from overseas, Mainland and local, including HM Lui Memorial Fund scholars. In the evening are the Annual General Meeting, Fellows Conferment and Members Admission ceremonies, to be followed by the grand 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner.
