Election of Council Members

The term of office of the 5 elected Council members will expire at the conclusion of this year's annual general meeting. An election process has started in July, and results will be announced at the AGM to be held in December 2011. Fellows should have received the nomination form earlier. Completed nomination form must reach the Academy office before 5 p.m. on 12 September 2011.

 


 

David Todd Oration

This year's David Todd Oration will be held on 16 December 2011, in conjunction with the Fellowship Conferment ceremony and AGM. The Academy is honoured to have Prof. Dennis Lo, FRS, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine & Professor of Chemical Pathology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to be speaker. His oration topic is "Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis: from dream to reality".

 


 

Golf Tournament

45th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine

The Academy President, Vice President and president/representatives of 10 Colleges attended the 45th SMCM in Singapore during 21-23 July 2011. The delegation also attended the joint Council meeting of academies of Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. When in Singapore, the delegation also met with Dr York Chow, Secretary for Food & Health, who was invited to deliver an oration at the Congress. The delegation had some discussion with the SFH on matters relating to specialist training, medical manpower and services standard.

Treatment (Management) of Tobacco Dependence

A 2-day workshop entitled "Physician Training Workshop on Tobacco Dependence Treatment - Hong Kong", co-organised by Department of Health and the Academy, was held on 30-31 July 2011 at the Centre for Health Protection. Professor Richard Hurt from Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center was the speaker for this workshop which covers various topics - Tobacco Dependence as a Chronic Disease and Tobacco-Caused Diseases; Secondhand Smoke, Thirdhand Smoke and Smokeless Tobacco; Neurobiology of Tobacco Dependence; Nicotine Pharmacotherapy in Primary Care and Hospital Settings; Non-Nicotine Pharmacotherapy; An Overview Demonstration of Motivational Interviewing plus Video; Special Populations: Adolescents, Pregnancy, Mental Illness & Substance Abuse; Evidence Based and Non-Evidence Based Treatment. All 15 Colleges have sent their representatives to attend this workshop to show their support.

Expert Witness Training Course

The Academy of Experts (AoE) will run several Expert Witness Training Courses in Hong Kong in November. The HKAM Council has agreed to be supporting organization for this course. Interested Fellows can download the Course Information and Registration Form here.

CEPA

Under CEPA Supplement VII, statutory healthcare professionals who are registered to practise in Hong Kong are allowed to provide short-term services in the Mainland. The maximum duration of the licence for short-term practice is 3 years. On expiry, the licence for short term practice is renewable upon a new application. Hong Kong permanent residents who are legally eligible to practise western medicine, dentistry and Chinese medicine in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region are not required to sit the Mainland's qualification examination for the purpose of short term practice in the Mainland. Hong Kong Acadey of Medicine

The Royal Society of Medicine

Collaboration on Reciprocal Facilities between the Academy and Royal Society of Medicine

The Academy and RSM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) since 2007 for reciprocal use of facilities by Fellows and members of the two organisations. Under this MOU, RSM will allow HKAM Fellows to use the accommodation facilities (Chandos House http://www.chandoshouse.co.uk/ only), restaurants, bars and lounges of the RSM when they travel to London . The services will be provided to HKAM Fellows on pay-on-use basis by the user. Fellows who wish to use the facilities of RSM can contact the Academy's Manager (External Affairs) on [email protected]. The Academy will provide a letter of introduction for authentication of Fellowship status at reservation for facilities.

RSM would also like to extend its membership to the Academy Fellows. With support from the Academy, the RSM President Professor Parveen Kumar is now providing a special joining offer for the Academy Fellows. HKAM Fellows will not have to pay a joining fee (only the annual membership subscription). Facilities at the Academy

Academy Lounge

The Academy Lounge on 3/F is an ideal place for Fellows to sit back and relax with friends or associates over a glass of wine. It can also be turned into a gallery for exhibitions of paintings and photos. Fellows who are amateur photographer or painter can consider displaying their collection there over a period of time and share their work with visitors. For the health-conscious Fellows, there is a fitness centre with basic gym equipment and a sauna.

There is also a VIP room at the lounge that provides an exclusive environment for private gatherings. The Academy Lounge opens daily from 12:00noon - 9:00pm (Monday to Saturday) and 9:00am - 9:00pm (Sundays and Public Holidays). For information, please call 2871 8737.

 

Fellows' Garden

The Fellows' Garden on 3/F just outside the lounge is equipped with a BBQ counter that could cater around 20 guests. Fellows can host full-service BBQ parties for families and friends or arrange a less formal BBQ gathering for special guests to take a break during medical conferences.
