Extraordinary General Meeting - 16 June 2011

Council has decided to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on 16 June 2011 (Thurs) to admit new Fellows. The EGM will be held at 7:30 pm at the Council Chamber, 10/F HKAM Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. All Fellows are welcome to attend.

 


 

Press Briefing about Health Effects of Nuclear Radiation

In response to the public's growing concerns over the spread of radioactive particles from Japan to Hong Kong, the Academy organised a press briefing on 18 March 2011, with the aim of giving out correct information and more positive message through the media to ease unnecessary anxiety in the community. Representatives from around 35 media groups attended the briefing at the Academy Building that day.

During the one-hour briefing, the Academy President, along with Dr. Yu-fai CHOI from the College of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Kai-man YU from the College of O & G, Dr. Ivan Wing-chit MAK from the College of Psychiatrists, and Dr. Chun-key LAW from the College of Radiologists, presented facts and data related to radiation contamination, the potential health risks to people especially pregnant women and children, the signs and symptoms of sickness, the efficient method of clearing possible radioactive dust from the skin and clothing, the proper use and effectiveness of potassium iodine, the mass panic caused by the spread of rumours and distorted reasoning, as well as some ways to deal with mood distress arising from the incident.

 


 

An Introduction to Using Your Medical Experience in the Legal and Dispute Arena

The seminar, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the Academy of Experts (UK), was held on 24 March and well attended by Fellows. Mr. Michael Cohen, Chairman Emeritus of the Academy of Experts, together with Miss Nicola Cohen and Mr. Steve Hannaford, clarified at the seminar that the overriding and paramount duty of an expert witness is to the court. They also gave some important hints on what an expert witness should and should not do when in court and writing reports.

MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety

Nature of the Award
The MPS-HKAM Award for Patient Safety is jointly organized by the Medical Protection Society and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective of the Award is to encourage medical professionals to promote on the subject of patient safety and risk reduction.

Who is Eligible for the Award?
Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of the following topics, are eligible for the Award:

  • Patient safety
  • Risk reduction
  • Quality and professional standards
  • Medical ethics

Presentation of the Award
The Award (a plaque and a cheque of HK$20,000) will be presented to the winning author. The Winner of the Award will be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.

Application will open from 1 June 2011 and close on 31 July 2011.

2011 Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2011 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows. Please be reminded that it is Council's policy that subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible. Fellows aged over 70, or have reached 70 before the beginning of the next subscription year, do not need to pay any subscription and will not receive a debit note. For Fellows who have authorized payment via bank transfer, payments will be deducted from their bank accounts automatically.

 


 

Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees

The Prize for Best Original Research by Trainees of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine recognizes excellence in research done by doctors who are in specialist training. Submission deadline for the year 2011 award is 30 June 2011 (postmark). Interested trainee doctors can download the following documents (PDF and MS Word format) for reference and use.

 


 

Obituary

The Academy regrets to inform Fellows that sadly, Prof. Wu Jieping passed away on 2 March 2011 in Beijing. Prof Wu, a famous urologist, was admitted an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2001. He had held important positions in the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and various medical universities.
