Fellowship Conferment/David Todd Oration

The Academy's AGM, Fellowship Conferment Ceremony and David Todd Oration were well attended by Fellows and guests on 17 December 2010.

The 2010 orator was Prof. Malik Peiris, Chair Professor of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, Honorary Consultant Microbiologist at Queen Mary Hospital and the Scientific Director of the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre in Hong Kong. Election of Officers

During the 17th AGM held on 17 December 2010, results of the election of Officers were announced.

In accordance with the HKAM Ordinance, an election was conducted earlier. 6 nominations were received before the deadline of 23 August 2010. As there is only one nominee for each of the 6 posts, the candidates are elected to their respective post ipso facto.

The term of office of the 6 Officers began on 17 December 2010 and will end at the conclusion of the AGM in 2012. The meeting recorded a vote of thanks to Dr Richard KAY who has served the Academy Council as Editor for 6 years.


Best Original Paper Award (BOPA)

This year marks the fourth year of the Best Original Paper Award, presented by the Editorial Board of the Hong Kong Medical Journal, to encourage original writings of good quality by doctors. Three papers were shortlisted from the December 2009 to October 2010 issues by the local Editorial Board and sent to the International Editorial Advisory Board for a final adjudication. The winner of the 2010 Best Original Paper Award went to Dr OF Wong et al, for their paper entitled 'Prevalence of drugged drivers among non-fatal driver casualties presenting to a trauma centre in Hong Kong' (Hong Kong Med J 2010;16:246-51).



Best Original Research by Trainees (BORT)

The result of the 2010 BORT was announced during the Conferment Ceremony on 17 December 2010 and the medals were presented to the 3 winners. The Academy would like to thank the Panel of Judges for their time and works. The Panel consists of Prof. Lo Chung Mau (Panel Chairman), Dr. Kam Chak Wah, Prof. Linda Lam, Prof. Raymond Liang, Dr. Leung Ting Hung, and Dr. C.T. Hung. The Academy would also like to thank the trainees who have submitted their papers for this competition.

Position Paper on Postgraduate Medical Education

Council has endorsed the position paper prepared by the Education Committee earlier. This position paper is the result of series of discussion, starting from the Postgraduate Medical Education Workshop organized by the Academy in June 2009. It serves to highlight the proposed key reforms to postgraduate medical education that are required to modernize the Fellowship training system such that the Academy will produce Fellows meeting the needs of the society in a sustainable manner. Interested Fellow can read the paper at the Academy's website under the "Publications" section.



Sedation Training Course

The Sedation Training Course was held successfully on 11 December 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. A total of 19 practitioners attended the Course. The whole-day activity covered a wide range of sedation topics including pharmacology and physiology sedation, common drugs used in sedation, reducing risks of sedation and common adverse events and management. The PBLD and Q&A sessions were very useful, as they enabled instructors to point out areas to which practitioners should pay more attention in their practice. The Academy would like to thank the instructors for their time in preparing the Course.



2010 Golf Results

The Inter Academy golf tournament was successfully held on November 10, 2010 at Kau Sai Chau Jockey Club Public Golf Club, Hong Kong. A total 49 fellows / members from Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Academy of Medicine Malaysia and Academy of Medicine Singapore participated. The Academy wishes to thank members of the Organising Committee for their time and effort, and Crown Motors for their support. Winners are listed below:

Chinese New Year

The Academy Lounge and the Dining Room will be closed on 3-13 February 2011 for the Chinese New Year and stock-taking. Services will be resumed on 14 February 2011. The Academy Secretariat will be closed at 1 pm on 2 February 2011 (Chinese New Year Eve).
