List of Fellows who are interested in acting as expert witness
The Academy has been approached from time to time by the Police, Medical Council / Dental Council and legal firms for assistance in identifying Fellows to be expert witness. In this regard, the Academy plans to compile a list of Fellows who are interested in being expert witness, which will be made available to the Police, other government departments, Medical Council, Dental Council, and legal firms upon formal request.
The Academy would like to invite interested Fellows to be included in this list. It is also hoped that Fellows intending to be included in the list could attend relevant courses in order that they would know better how to conduct themselves fairly and professionally, and be more able to produce an impartial expert report of adequate quality.
Please complete and return the reply form to the Academy before 15 August 2010, if you are interested to be included in the list. Please note that the List will be updated regularly and the Academy will have discretion not to include a Fellow in the List.
2010 Honours List
The Government announced this year's Honours List on 1 July 2010. The Past President and Honorary Fellow of the Academy, Dr. CH Leong, has been awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM). Prof. Richard Yu, Past President of Hong Kong College of Physicians, and a Fellow, Dr Wilina Lim Wei-ling, have been awarded Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS). Dr. Lau Shun Tung, Benjamin has also been awarded the Medal of Honor (MH). Congratulations to all the recipients!
Communicating right when things go wrong
The Academy and Medical Protection Society (MPS) jointly invite you to this seminar. Clinicians occasionally encounter situations when management outcome is suboptimal and clients are unhappy. Due to a multitude of factors, communication is often difficult especially when involving debatable issues during the technical management process. Yet this is the occasion where communication has to be right.
The General CPD Subcommittee has invited several prominent speakers to share views and experience on communication when clinical management outcomes are less favourable. This seminar delivers messages on how to manage medical mishaps from the MPS perspective and about open disclosure from the medico-legal perspectives. An experienced colleague also shares her vast experience with disclosing adversity.
The seminar is free of charge.

CME/CPD Reminder
The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2010. All Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR. Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship. Starting from 1 January 2008, no more than 75 points can be awarded for passive participation in a 3-year cycle. Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far falls behind greatly of the requirements.
New CMECPD Guidelines
A revised set of CMECPD Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Major changes are in Section 6, in which Fellows are strongly advised to maintain a balanced CMECPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in category 6.11 (Quality Assurance, Audits and Activities for Improvement of Patient/Medical Care) in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPD activities. Fellows can download the new guidelines from the following link.
