Pilot Scheme for Specialist Accreditation - Ministry of Health
The Academy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in April 2006 to facilitate the development of a specialist registration system in Mainland China. Pilot scheme started in April 2008. In March 2009, MOH released a Work Plan for the Pilot Scheme and started the accreditation with assistance from the Academy and 4 Colleges, namely Dental Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons and Paediatricians. On 25 June 2010, an inauguration ceremony of certification of "Grandfathers" for the 4 specialties was conducted in Beijing. The Academy and Colleges involved in the pilot scheme were invited to attend. Below is a letter from Prof. Grace Tang reporting the event.
Dear Fellows,
Pilot Scheme for Specialist Accreditation Ministry of Health
I am extremely happy to report to you that on 25 June 2010, your Academy was invited to the inauguration ceremony of the certification of "Grandfathers" for the specialties of Dental Surgery, Opthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery and Paediatrics. Some 70 renowned doctors of these 4 specialties were conferred the title of "Specialists" by the Ministry of Health. This is the landmark for the beginning of training and accreditation of specialists in Mainland China.
I am very proud to be able to witness the role played by your Academy, and the enthusiasm of so many of my colleagues who have given up their valuable time and offered tremendous effort to assist in this Pilot Scheme. To them, I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude and appreciation for a job well done in only 3 years. What they have achieved is a selfless task for the good of the medical standard in Mainland, and for the Academy to be recognized as the statutory body in Hong Kong for postgraduate training and education.
This is only the beginning of a colossal scheme of the Ministry of Health, and part of their healthcare reform. I hope that Fellows of the Academy will continue to lend assistance, and be able to become part of this worthwhile cause. You may wish to read Vice-Minister Huang's speech through this link http://www.moh.gov.cn/publicfiles/business/htmlfiles/mohbgt/s3582/201006/47885.htm.
Best Wishes for a wonderful summer,
Yours sincerely,
Grace Tang

Communicating right when things go wrong
The Academy and Medical Protection Society (MPS) jointly invite you to this seminar. Clinicians occasionally encounter situations when management outcome is suboptimal and clients are unhappy. Due to a multitude of factors, communication is often difficult especially when involving debatable issues during the technical management process. Yet this is the occasion where communication has to be right.
The General CPD Subcommittee has invited several prominent speakers to share views and experience on communication when clinical management outcomes are less favourable. This seminar delivers messages on how to manage medical mishaps from the MPS perspective and about open disclosure from the medico-legal perspectives. An experienced colleague also shares her vast experience with disclosing adversity.
The seminar is free of charge.
