Academy Policy on Reduced Subscription Rates

Fellows are requested to note that reduced rates (retired, overseas) will be effective from the next subscription year after submission of an application. Eligible Fellows should therefore submit their applications before 31 December 2009 if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates in year 2010. Details of the policy can be found in the Fellows Area of the Academy website.

 


 

David Todd Oration/Annual General Meeting

This year’s AGM, Conferment Ceremony and David Todd Oration will be held on 18 December 2009. The Academy is delighted to have Dr. Ron Zimmern to speak on Genomics, Personalised Medicine and the Role of Public Health in the 21st Century at the Oration. Dr. Ron Zimmern is the Executive Director of the PHG Foundation, the successor to the Public Health Genetics Unit which he established in 1997.

An Annual Dinner will be held later that evening. Please find details in the programme below and download the registration form to reserve seats for the Annual Dinner.

Fellows will receive the Academy’s Annual Report and AGM notice shortly.

 


 

Annual Subscription Direct Debit Authorisation

To facilitate settlement of annual subscriptions by Fellows, the Academy will accept auto-pay arrangement starting from 2010. A letter enclosing a “Direct Debit Authorisation (DDA)” Form has been sent to Fellows (except those who do not need to pay subscriptions, e.g. aged 70 or above). Fellows who wish to pay their annual subscriptions via auto-pay please complete and return the Form to the Academy by 15 November 2009. Please note that DDA will be acceptable for transfers from bank accounts in Hong Kong only.

 


 

First AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress

The First Tripartite Congress of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, and Academy of Medicine, Singapore will be held from 12-14 November 2010 in Hong Kong. This will also be the 44th Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine. The theme of the Congress is “Benefits and Risks of Recent Medical Advances”. More information will be announced in due course.

Annual Scientific Meeting in Ophthalmology (ASM 2009)

The ASM in Ophthalmology 2009, organised by the Hong Kong College of Ophthalmologists, will be held from 5-6 December 2009 at The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The theme for the ASM 2009 meeting is “Glaucoma”. This will be a two-day comprehensive scientific programme covering advances in Glaucoma. Professor Peng Tee Khaw, Professor of Glaucoma and Ocular Healing and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon of Moorfields Eye Hospital from United Kingdom will be our Featured Speaker. In addition, two top local scholars, Professor Calvin Chi-pui Pang from Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Kwok-fai So from Department of Anatomy, University of Hong Kong are invited to enlighten the participants the latest trends of our eye research.

Reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions – Seasonal Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccines

The Government implemented the updated Childhood Immunisation Programme (CIP) on 1 September 2009 and Government Vaccination Programme (GVP) 2009/10 on 19 October 2009. The Department of Health would like to appeal to Fellows to observe any suspected drug-related adverse drug reaction (ADRs) and side effects, particularly those relating to the administration of seasonal influenza vaccine and pneumococcal vaccines, and to report them to their ADR Monitoring Unit via the following means:

a) by post to 3/F, PHLC, 382 Nam Cheong Street, Kowloon (Attn: ADR Monitoring Unit);
b) by fax to 2572 4570; or
c) by email to [email protected]

Common minor reactions after vaccinations such as minor local reactions and fever that is below 39°C are not required to be reported. A list of reportable vaccine-related ADRs, classified under different categories, can be found in the guidance notes available at http://www.psdh.gov.hk/eps/eng/html/adr_guidance_notes.pdf
