2008 CME Congress (29-31 May 2008)
International Forum on CPD Accreditation (1 June 2008)

A delegation of 10 attended the Congress and Forum in Vancouver from 29 May to 1 June 2008. The delegation consists of the President, Vice-President (Edu. & Exams), General Secretary of the Academy, and 7 Presidents/representatives of College of Anaesthesiologists, Community Medicine, Dental Surgeons, Family Physicians, Radiologists and Surgeons.

During the congress and forum, presentation/discussion were made covering various topics including “Competence Assessment” and “Whether CME/CPD should be recorded based on time”.

The Vice-President (E&E) and the General Secretary would summarize key issues discussed during the congress/forum and bring them to the Education Committee for consideration/ discussion.

2008 Honours List

The Government has announced this year's Honours List on 1 July 2008. The President and a Fellow are awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS):

Prof. Grace TANG Wai-king is awarded the SBS in recognition of her distinguished public service and outstanding contribution to the medical and health sector, particularly her contribution in promoting the professional standards of medical practitioners in Hong Kong.

Prof. Joseph Sriyal Malik PEIRIS is awarded the SBS for his outstanding achievements in the field of virology and pathology, in particular his contribution to the prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Two Council Members and three Fellows are awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS):

Dr KO Wing-man is awarded the BBS in recognition of his dedicated and meritorious service in public health as well as his contribution in strengthening the cooperation between the medical sectors in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Dr LAM Ching-choi is awarded the BBS for his meritorious public and community service, particularly his contribution and devotion to welfare services.

Dr LEONG Fung Ling-yee, Lilian, is awarded the BBS in recognition of her contribution in promoting and developing radiology education and services for the betterment of healthcare delivery to the community of Hong Kong.

Dr MAK Sin-ping is awarded the BBS for her dedicated and meritorious service to the Government for over 30 years. She retired as the Controller, Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.

Dr SO Pik-han, Kathleen, is awarded the BBS in recognition of her dedicated and meritorious service in the public health sector, particularly her contribution to the promotion and development of community medicine in Hong Kong.

Several Fellows are also awarded the Medal of Honor (MH). Congratulations to all of the recipients!

 


 

Admission of Fellows

A total of 145 new Fellows were admitted at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 19 June 2008.

Election of Officers

The term of office of the existing Officers will expire at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in December this year. An election of new Officers will be conducted soon within Council in accordance with procedures stipulated in the Regulations. The results will be announced at the AGM.

New European Surgical Academy (NESA) Meeting in Naples

The NESA meeting titled "Natural Orifice Surgery and other innovations" will take place in Naples, Italy, on 21-22 November 2008. This meeting will enable surgeons from various disciplines to update themselves with innovative surgical ideas. Some of them, such as Transdouglas Abdominal Surgery, the modified Thyroidectomy, and recent developments in Ductuscopy and Neuropelveology, are presented for the first time. NESA was founded by leading surgeons from various disciplines in order to optimize and standardize surgical procedures according to evidence-based facts. Academy Lounge

The Academy Lounge on 3/F is an ideal place for Fellows to sit back and relax with friends or associates over a glass of wine. It can also be turned into a gallery for exhibitions of paintings and photos. Fellows who are amateur photographer or painter can consider displaying their collection there over a period of time and share their work with visitors. For the health-conscious Fellows, there is a fitness centre with basic gym equipment and a sauna. There is also a VIP room at the lounge that provides an exclusive environment for private gatherings. Fellows' Garden

The Fellows' Garden on 3/F just outside the lounge is equipped with a BBQ counter that could cater around 20 guests. Fellows can host full-service BBQ parties for families and friends or arrange a less formal BBQ gathering for special guests to take a break during medical conferences.
