Collaboration with Ministry of Health on Specialist Registration in Mainland The Academy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in April 2006 to facilitate the development of a specialist registration system in Mainland China. Several working meetings were held subsequently and the Academy has been working with MOH closely on the project for the past two years. A “kick-off” ceremony of the pilot scheme was held in Beijing on 18 April 2008. The Academy President, Vice-president (Edu. & Exams), Academy’s advisors on the Working Group, representatives from Colleges of Dental Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Paediatricians attended the ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by representatives from mainland organizations/hospitals involved in the pilot scheme. The speech of the Vice Minister of Health at the ceremony will be published in the next issue of the Academy Focus.

2005-2007 CME/CPD Cycle Following the close of the CME/CPD cycle for 2005-2007, Colleges have reported to the Academy’s Education Committee some non-compliance cases. A letter has been sent to Fellows who have been reported to have failed to obtain the required number of points for the cycle ending 31 December 2007. The Academy would like to remind Fellows that CME/CPD non-compliance may affect their Fellowship and Specialist Registration (SR) status, and would like to request Fellows to respond on time to calls from their Colleges for CME/CPD returns. This would help your College and the Academy in accurate and timely reporting to the Academy Council, Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK), and Dental Council of Hong Kong (DCHK) for the purposes of Fellowship and SR maintenance.
CME/CPD for Specialist Registration Fellows are reminded that Specialist Registration(SR) is maintained by MCHK/DCHK. The Academy’s duty is only to make reports to MCHK/DCHK on compliance of CME/CPD for the purpose of SR. While the Academy can grant exemption to Fellows retired from active practice, this is for the purpose of Fellowship only. The MRO and DRO stipulate that CME is a must for the SR. The Academy will cease to record CME/CPD for a Fellow upon his/her resignation or approval of CME exemption, and shall inform the MCHK/DCHK once his/her name has been removed from the Academy’s register. Fellows who wish to resign his Fellowship or apply for CME/CPD exemption should consider voluntary resignation from the SR with MCHK/DCHK directly, if their names are on the SR. The Academy cannot do this on behalf of Fellows.
