October 2001

Election of Council Members

At the close of nominations on 3 September 2001, the following nominations were received.  Fellows will receive the ballot papers in mid October and should return the same to the Secretariat by 5 November 2001, 5:00 pm.  Fellow may vote for ANY BUT NOT MORE THAN FIVE candidates.  According to HKAM Regulation 8(7)(a), not more than one member of any single College may be elected to the Council under the category of elected Council members.  The Academy has sought legal advice on the effect of double Fellowship (carried by nominees) on the election.  According to the legal advice, if a nominee is a member of 2 Colleges, his status as a member of both Colleges cannot be changed unless he ceases to be a member of one of the Colleges.  For example, if EITHER Dr. E (College 4) OR Dr. F (College 5) gets higher number of vote than Dr. D (with double Fellowship of Colleges 4 and 5).  Dr. D will not be elected.  On the other hand, if Dr. D (Colleges 4 and 5) gets higher number of votes than Dr. E (College of 4) and Dr. F (College 5), BOTH Dr. E and Dr. F will not be elected.  Please see illustration for more details.

New Specialty

Council has recently approved “Rehabilitation” as a new specialty.  Unlike previous ones, this specialty will not be attached to any particular College, as it was felt that “Rehabilitation” involves various areas under different Colleges.  The total number of specialties under the Academy has now been increased to 54.

Hong Kong Medical Journal

Council has endorsed in principle the Editor’s proposal to increase the number of issues from 4 to 6 per year (i.e. from quarterly to bimonthly).  Since the journal was indexed, the publication office has received increasing number of article submissions.  By more frequent publication, the waiting time will be decreased.  Fellows are welcome to submit their articles to the Managing Editor of HKMJ.

Golf Day

As reported in this section and in AcademyFocus earlier, the  “2001 Golf Day” will be held on 5 December 2001 (Wednesday) at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling.  The Academy has received many registrations already.   Fellows who are really interested in participating could still inform the secretariat by email ([email protected] ), fax (2505 5577), or phone (2871 8888).  Kindly note that registrations by now may have to be put in the waiting list, due to limited number of tee-off time available.
