2007 David Todd Oration and Annual Dinner

The Academy is honoured to have Vice-Minister of Health, Prof. Huang Jie-fu to be this year’s orator.  His oration topic is “Healthcare for Tomorrow’s China”.  The 2007 David Todd Oration will be held in conjunction with the AGM, Fellowship Conferment and Annual Dinner on 13 December 2007.

Collaboration with Ministry of Health on Specialist Registration in Mainland

During 13 to 17 August 2007, a delegation of “grandfathers” from the 4 piloting hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou visited the Academy.  The 4 specialty groups met with the representatives of the Colleges of Dental Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Paediatricians respectively.  The Colleges also arranged visits to training sites and provided some training as trainers for these grandfathers.

Visit of Chinese Medical Doctor Association

Upon invitation by the Guangdong Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), the Academy President visited Guangzhou and made a presentation to the Guangdong CMDA members on 4 August 2007 to introduce to them the specialist system in Hong Kong.  A delegation from the Guangdong CMDA visited Hong Kong during the week of 6 August, and visited the Academy, and two training hospitals.

2008-2010 CME/CPD Cycle

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows will end on 31 December 2007.   As reported earlier, number of points obtained by means of passive participation will be capped at 75 for a cycle, effective from 1 January 2008.  Fellows are reminded to take note of this for the coming cycle.  Fellows can click below to obtain a copy of the Academy’s CMECPD Guidelines.  For individual College guidelines, Fellows should contact their Colleges.

Since the existing cycle will end in a few months time, Fellows are reminded to make sure they will obtain the required number of CME/CPD points before the end of this year, and to catch up if the points they have obtained so far fall short of the requirements greatly.  Fellows who are on the Specialist Register (SR) of the Medical Council or Dental Council will need to fulfil the requirements of the Academy to remain on the SR.  Fellows, except those exempted for CME/CPD due to retirement, are also required to fulfil the requirements to maintain the Academy Fellowship.

2011-2013 CME/CPD Cycle

For the CME/CPD cycle starting 1 January 2011, on top of changes for 2008,  Fellows would be strongly encouraged to (a) maintain a balanced CME/CPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in quality assurance audits and activities for improvement of patient care in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CME/CPD activities; and (b) increase further the CME/CPD points gained from activities other than passive participation through decreasing the proportion of passive participation CME/CPD activities.  Fellows will receive further detailed information from the Academy shortly.

New Sub-specialty

Council has endorsed the recommendation of Education Committee to recognize a new sub-specialty, namely Maternal & Fetal Medicine, under the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Academy Policy on Reduced Subscription Rates
Fellows are requested to note that reduced rates (retired, overseas) will be effective from the next subscription year after submission of an application.  Eligible Fellows should therefore submit their applications before 31 December 2007 if they wish to enjoy the reduced rates in year 2008.   Details of the policy can be found in the Fellows Area of the Academy website.
