HKAM Medico-Legal Seminar Series 2006: Practice Promotion by
Doctors The Academy arranged a series of medico-legal seminars earlier in the year, and they were well received by Fellows. Upon requests by Fellows, another medico-legal seminar entitled “Practice Promotion by Doctors” will be held at 2:00 - 5:30 pm on 30 September 2006 (Saturday) at Pao Yue Kong Auditorium of the HKAM Building. The speakers will discuss the recent High Court Judgment which announced that certain provisions of the Professional Code and Conduct violate freedom of expression and the legal implications of the Judgment. Discussion Forum: From CME to CPD Fellows may be aware from the news and publications of the
Academy that the Education Committee has been considering the move to CPD
for quite a long time. After
years of discussion, the Academy Council has agreed in principle to move
forward to CPD in stages. Before
proceeding further, the Academy would like to explain to Fellows about the rationale and the
details of the change and listen to Fellows’ views on the proposed move. A
forum will be held at 5:30
- 6:30 pm on 30 September 2006 (Saturday) at Pao Yue Kong Auditorium of
the
HKAM
Building. The Academy hopes
Fellows
can spend some
time to attend so that the Academy can hear from as many of Fellows as
possible in order that the Academy can make a programme that can fulfill
its goal as well as Fellows’ needs.
Collaboration with
Ministry of Health on Specialist Registration in Mainland Representatives
from the Ministry of Health (MOH), including Vice Minister Huang Jie-fu
and representatives from the Department of Medical Administration,
Department of Medical Science, Technology & Education and the
Department of International Cooperation attended a meeting with the Hong
Kong Academy of Medicine (the Academy) on 1 August 2006 regarding the

Sister Mary Gabriel O'Mahony The Academy regrets to inform Fellows that Sister Mary Gabriel O'Mahony passed away peacefully on 26 August 2006 in Ireland. Sister Gabriel, known throughout the local medical community for her work on prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, was elected the Academy's first Honorary Fellow in 1996.
Scientific Symposium on Emergency Medicine 2006 The 2nd Scientific Symposium on Emergency Medicine, entitled “Meeting a Decade of Challenges”, will be held at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine on 20-21 October 2006. This symposium is co-organised by the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine, Hong Kong Society for Emergency Medicine and Surgery and Hong Kong Emergency Nurses Association. Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases (RFCID) / Health and Health Services Research Fund (HHSRF) The RFCID and HHSRF have issued a joint call for research
grant applications. The closing date
