Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in April last year, the Academy has been working closely with MOH on this project. A preparatory committee has been formally established. Both Vice Minister Huang Jie-fu and the Academy President, Prof. Grace Tang, were appointed Principal Members (主任委員) of this Committee. Eight Academy Fellows were also appointed Advisors to this Committee, they are Dr. Chan Chok-wan, Dr. David Fang, Dr. Hung Chi-tim, Prof. Lau Wan-yee, Dr. Leong Che-hung, Prof. John Leong, Prof. William Wei and Prof. Richard Yu.

On 30 March, Prof. Grace Tang and Prof. W.Y Lau were invited to present the Hong Kong specialist training and accreditation system at a symposium organized by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association at Beijing. The symposium was attended by about 600 participants, including representatives from MOH and different provinces in mainland.

MOH has identified training units for the 4 selected piloting specialties, namely Dental Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery and Paediatrics.  On request by the MOH, the Academy and the 4 Colleges will help review the draft documents on training curricula and accreditation requirements for training units.
