Visit of Vice Minister of Health

Vice Minister of Health, Dr. Liu Qian, and Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Science, Technology and Education, Dr. Meng Qun, visited Hong Kong earlier.  The Academy President, hosted a dinner for Drs. Liu and Meng on 20 January 2008.  The dinner was joined by the Vice-President (Edu. & Exams), the Honorary Treasurer, and President of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists, Community Medicine, and Dental Surgeons.

Think Tank Project

A Think Tank was formed after the Strategic Planning Workshop held in March last year.  The Think Tank is chaired by Prof. John Leong, comprising the Vice President (General Affairs) and  representatives from the Colleges of Family Physicians and Physicians as members.  Council has at its last meeting approved a proposal submitted by the Think Tank to conduct a research entitled “A Study on the Medical Requirements of Elderly Citizens in Hong Kong”.  The Academy has invited several research centres to submit a proposal for the survey services, and finally decided to appoint the Quality Evaluation Centre of the City University of Hong Kong to conduct the survey.

The Secretariat will be closed at 13:00 on 6 February 2008 (Chinese New Year Eve) and will re-open on 11 February 2008 (Monday).

The Academy Lounge and Dining Room will be closed on 7-13 February 2008.  Services will be resumed on 14 February 2008.

HIMSS AsiaPac 2008 Conference & Exhibition

The HIMSS AsiaPac 2008 will be held on 20-23 May 2008 in Hong Kong.  Registration for the conference has started, please visit their website http://www.himssasiapac.org/.  The Academy is one of the Supporting Organisations of this conference.  Academy Fellows will be entitled to HIMSS Member Rate. 

3rd Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the International Association for Suicide Prevention

This conference is hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research & Prevention, HKU on 31 Oct to 3 Nov 2008 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. 2008 Annual Subscriptions

Demand notes for the 2008 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows from either the Academy or their College. Fellows will note that the subscription amount this year is reduced, as the Academy Council has upon recommendation of the Finance & Investment Committee approved a one-off 50% reduction of the annual subscription to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Academy in 2008. Please be reminded that it is Council's policy that subscriptions received by the Academy after 30 June will be subject to a surcharge of 5% on the subscription amount. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.  

HKAM 15th Anniversary Congress, 15-16 November 2008

Hong Kong Academy of Medicine turns 15 this year!

To mark the 15th anniversary of Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Academy will organise the HKAM 15th Anniversary Congress during 15-16 November 2008 in the Academy Building.  The 2-day exciting programme, entitled "Grand Rounds - Working Together: The Power of Collaboration", will comprise multi-disciplinary case study presentations.  Fellows are encouraged to actively involve during the case discussion.  For details of the Programme, please check here <http://www.hkam.org.hk/hkam15>.

5-Day Working Week

Council has endorsed the recommendation of House Committee to adopt 5-day working week. Starting from January 2008, opening hours of the HKAM Secretariat will be:  

Monday to Friday: 08:30 - 17:30 (Lunch Hour: 12:30 - 13:30)

Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday : Closed

Opening hours of other facilities in the Academy Building , e.g. Lounge, Dining Room, will remain unchanged.

2008-2010 CME/CPD Cycle

The current CME/CPD cycle for Academy Fellows ended on 31 December 2007.   As reported earlier, number of points obtained by means of passive participation will be capped at 75 for a cycle, effective from 1 January 2008.  Fellows are reminded to take note of this for the coming cycle.  Fellows can click below to obtain a copy of the Academy's CMECPD Guidelines.  For individual College guidelines, Fellows should contact their Colleges.

2011-2013 CME/CPD Cycle

For the CME/CPD cycle starting 1 January 2011, on top of changes for 2008.  Fellows would be strongly encouraged to (a) maintain a balanced CME/CPD profile with a mix of different activities, including 5 points in a cycle from activities in quality assurance audits and activities for improvement of patient care in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CME/CPD activities; and (b) increase further the CME/CPD points gained from activities other than passive participation through decreasing the proportion of passive participation CME/CPD activities.  Fellows will receive further detailed information from the Academy shortly.
