Codeine-containing Medications in Infants

An Academy Fellow has recently written to the Academy asking for the Academy’s assistance to ban the use of codeine or codeine-containing medications in infants.  Council has requested comments from the College of Paediatricians.  The College is of the opinion that codeine is not recommended for use as antitussive medication in infants.  This view is in line with all available pharmacology books and drug formularies.  However, Council agreed with the College that it is outside the purview of the Academy and College to suggest banning any pharmaceutical products.
