Deeper Collaboration with China
The Academy Council held a strategic workshop in
August last year, during which Council decided that the Academy should establish
deeper collaboration with the Mainland. Prof. Huang Jiefu, Vice Minister of Health of the PRC,
visited the Academy in December and advised Council on what the Academy should
do to establish closer link with the Mainland.
With Prof. Huang’s advice, the Academy will send a delegation to the
Beijing shortly to pay visits to the relevant parties.
Codeine-containing Medications in Infants
An Academy Fellow has recently written to the
Academy asking for the Academy’s assistance to ban the use of codeine or
codeine-containing medications in infants.
Council has requested comments from the College of Paediatricians.
The College is of the opinion that codeine is not recommended for use as
antitussive medication in infants. This
view is in line with all available pharmacology books and drug formularies.
However, Council agreed with the College that it is outside the purview
of the Academy and College to suggest banning any pharmaceutical products.

of Science awarded to Immediate Past President
