The standard of medical and dental practitioners is of the paramount interest to the public. To help give assurance to the public, and to maintain and enhance the standards of specialists practising in Hong Kong as a whole, the Academy must strengthen the prevailing training and assessment systems of different specialties.
An Education Office is thus being set up under the Education Committee of the Academy. The new office will affect through our existing dedicated multidisciplinary team of colleagues from the Academy’s Secretariat and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine. By working closely with all the Colleges, the Education Office aims to better coordinate relevant resources and provide dedicated support to the overall development of initiatives relating to the postgraduate medical and dental education and training. It will collate the Academy’s different related functions being discharged at present, including accreditation and provision of CME/CPD accreditation, vetting of Fellowship nominations, certification for specialist qualifications of different levels, promulgation of good practices in medical professionalism and ethics, development of credentialling guidelines, engagement of Educationist to help review training curricula, examinations, and assessment methods among the different specialties, as well as capacity building to our Fellows and trainees in provision of specialist training (i.e., becoming trainers themselves). Such capacity building initiatives and reviews are crucial in upkeeping and raising the quality of training and assuring the validity and reliability of assessments.
The Centre was established in 2013 through the generous funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, equipped with world class simulation-based training facilities. It is committed to facilitating simulation-based learning and research opportunities for healthcare professionals in a safe clinical environment and strives to become a regional centre of excellence for medical simulation education.
The Centre is proudly affiliated with the Center for Medical Simulation, which is part of the Harvard medical community based in Boston, US, with a common goal of developing competent faculty to run simulation courses. A consensus agreement was signed with local health authorities and numerous medical institutions to promote simulation education in healthcare.
The Centre has evolved to become the Academy’s education arm. Visit its website for more information.
