Dr. Chow Yu-fat was a specialist anaesthesiologist qualified in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand with interests in cardiac and paediatric anaesthesia, trauma, resuscitation, sedation, simulation, medical education and patient safety. After being trained as an anaesthesiologist, Dr. Chow developed a special interest in medical education. He has served the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists (HKCA) as the Chairman of the Board of Education for eight years before he became the President of the College for another four years.

He strengthened the mechanism for the minimum volume of training for the specialist anaesthesiologist in Hong Kong with the implementation of e-Log book system and in-training assessment other than traditional summative assessment by examinations. He contributed to develop the first multi-specialty clinical guideline of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine “Guidelines on Procedural Sedation” in 2009.

As the President of the College, he enabled the establishment of the Fellowship of Pain Medicine with admission of First Fellows in 2012. He developed collaboration with the College of Anaesthesiologists, Singapore to recognize the HKCA’s Intermediate Examination for their specialist training. He worked with other specialties and organizations for the establishment of the Resuscitation Council of Hong Kong (RCHK) and later became the founding chairman in 2012 with the Secretary of Food and Health Bureau as the Honorary President.

Dr. Chow is currently the Chairman of the Clinical Simulation Committee of the College. He founded the multidisciplinary Hong Kong Society for Simulation in Healthcare in 2013 which became a member of the Hong Kong Simulation Alliance. He engaged heavily in inter-College collaboration for simulation based training of specialist doctors in Hong Kong. At a regional / international level, he was one of the founding Board of directors of the Pan Asia Simulation Society in Healthcare.

Dr. Chow, as the past president of the Society of Anaesthetists of Hong Kong, was appointed as the Treasurer of the Organizing Committee for the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists 2016, a continental quadrennial event, hosted in Hong Kong with more than 7000 delegates.
